46 Years and Counting

June 10, 2022 by Jim Brewer

When you’ve been doing something 46 years, you get pretty good at it. Marta and Maria Grado have been in the pizza making business for 46 years at their family-owned Anna’s Pizza, and they make pretty food pizzas. Some think there are none better, anywhere. We’re among that group. Nancy and I have been enjoying the gooiness of Anna’s pizzas for most of those 46 years. It’s where … [Read more...]

The Best Buy in Birdseed

June 10, 2022 by Jim Brewer

It is estimated that Americans spend over $41 billion (with a “b”) dollars each year on birding, and I do my share to keep keeping that lofty number in the stratosphere. I spend a ton for birdseed, bird feeders, and birding supplies. But it’s a hobby, sort of, that I truly enjoy. Nonetheless, it’s important to get the most for your money and in my book, the absolute best value in … [Read more...]

The $1 Scam

June 10, 2022 by Jim Brewer

There is another scam now on the Internet. The scam is designed as a customer survey from a major retailer such as Lowe’s, Home Depot or Dick’s Sporting Goods. They ask you to answer a few questions about your last visit and then say you may be eligible for a special gift for completing the survey. After you finish the survey, they say you are indeed eligible for an amazing prize for … [Read more...]

No Fail Brisket

June 10, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I have never had much luck with briskets. I have cooked them on the grill, I have smoked them, I have slow cooked them in the oven and the best I ever produced was just edible. My briskets have often turned out dry and tough. I see those barbeque shows on TV, salivate over the delicious-looking briskets, but for me, no luck – until this weekend when I decided to put the brisket in my … [Read more...]

The Spaniards are Attacking

June 10, 2022 by Jim Brewer

The Spaniards are at our doorstep, Spanish mackerel, that is, and they are moving well up into the Chesapeake Bay. Along side the sleek mackerel are an even sleeker fish – ribbonfish. They are fun to catch and good to eat. Spanish mackerel are now available to trollers from Sandbridge to Cape Henry. A large class of fish has arrived along the oceanfront and some smaller ones … [Read more...]

First Place Goes To….

June 2, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I once won a Blue Ribbon in a West Virginia Garden Club Flower Show. Therefore, despite what my golf buddies may say, I do have certain skills. This is how it all happened. My mother, Frances, was always involved with Garden Clubs and Flower Shows. She served as President in both the State and the National Garden Club. She judged shows across the country and was frequently called … [Read more...]

Red Romaine Leaf Lettuce

June 2, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Sometimes you get lucky. This spring I bought two varieties of lettuce to plant in the upper part of my garden which doesn’t get as much sun, and very little grows there. Lettuce, spring onions and potatoes usually occupy that space. I know about Black Simpson leaf lettuce, that does well. So, I bought a package of those seeds, then saw a pack of red romaine lettuce. Why not? I … [Read more...]

A Grackle Deterrent

June 2, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I have figured out how to keep deer out. I built a fence around my yard, then an enclosed fence for my garden. So, I don’t worry about deer. I also have squirrels reasonably under control with my garden fence, baffles on the seed poles, and the use of Red-Hot Bird Seed. But with squirrels, you never know. They are wily so-and-sos. But grackles are another story. They drive … [Read more...]
