Every time I cook ribs, I believe I use a different recipe. Sometimes they are good, sometimes not as good, but it’s pretty hard to screw up baby back ribs unless they are raw or burned. However, I have found there is a fine line between cooking ribs into oblivion and having them both well done and juicy. I cooked a rack of baby back ribs this week, and they were near perfect. They were … [Read more...]
Atkins Works
I was up 7 ½ pounds after our week-long cruise and a travel day of scarfing fast food. Plus, I was no Miss Twiggy before we left. Time for Dr. Atkins. In 10 days, I lost 10 pounds. When the Atkins Diet broke some 30 years ago, everyone ridiculed it. It was unhealthy and unsustainable, “they” said. Now “they” are all using Dr. Atkins’ diet of eating more protein and fewer carbs, … [Read more...]
Hawaii – A Great Vacation Spot
(With the proper size fixtures) By Nancy B Aloha! My husband and I took a long-awaited vacation to Hawaii a couple weeks ago and it was wonderful. Our trip had been cancelled last year because the staff had not yet had all the training necessary to handle Covid. I did not see one lighting showroom on the Islands we visited but the chandeliers on the ship were absolutely gorgeous. The sizes … [Read more...]
O’er the Rambling Wrecks
There are a few hale and hardy fishermen willing to brave the December elements and make runs out to the ocean wrecks off Virginia Beach. And they are catching fish! Jumbo sea bass have been bending rods over the rambling wrecks along with tautogs, trigger fish and some big bluefish. Fresh strips of bait are catching nice flounder, as well. Inshore, speckled trout are biting non-stop. … [Read more...]
Reflecting on Reflectors
Trees are flying off the lots at Lowe’s, grocery stores and makeshift Christmas tree stores in parking lots. Tis the season, you know, and folks are getting their trees up earlier and earlier each year. We waited to put up our Christmas tree exactly one week before Christmas, and we took it down exactly one week after. Never earlier, never later. It was tradition in our family when we lived in … [Read more...]
A Winter Garden Surprise
I plant spring onions from sets every year. They are usually the first things to pop out of the ground. Then, after about a month, they are mature enough to pluck from the soil and eat as delicious, tender spring onions. But I never pull them all up. A few get a little too plump for raw, spring onions, so I leave them alone. By July, the green tops have disappeared, and it looks like the onions … [Read more...]

My Personal Flotation Device
I have a personal flotation device – built in. It extends outward from the middle of my torso several inches. It has expanded greatly since my weeklong cruise where I ate any and everything in sight and gained 7 ½ pounds. Some would crassly refer to my PFD as a “gut”, but I prefer a personal flotation device - a much less crude description. I discovered the value of my PFD when we took a dip in … [Read more...]
I Wing My Way
I think wings might be my favorite part of the chicken. They are highly regarded by others, as well. Americans eat over one billion chicken wings per year. That’s billion with a “B”. We like wings because, first they taste good, and second, they are easy to eat and a specialty of the thousands and thousands of sports bars around the country. Because of an unending demand for chicken wings, they … [Read more...]
Rezips Save Money and Food
I wrote about these neat little storage bags a few months ago, but the more I use them, the more impressed I am. They are called Rezips, reusable storage bags. Before we left for 8 days on our Hawaiian Cruise, I had left some ham in one of the Rezip bags. When we returned, the ham was as fresh as before we left. That’s because the Rezips are airtight. They are also watertight and freezer safe. I … [Read more...]
