Water is the number one need for backyard birds in the winter. Number Two? Suet. Suet is a Super-Food for birds. It takes a lot of energy to keep birds warm in the winter, when temperatures drop to frigid numbers. Suet is a high-fat food that can provide that extra energy. While pure suet is fat, commercial suet combines fats and food to add nutrition and appeal. You can make your own suet – … [Read more...]
Pizza Stuffed Shells
Is there anybody who doesn’t like pizza? If so, I’ve never met this strange person. Pizza is just good stuff. Recently, I saw a recipe idea for Pizza Stuffed Shells, and I knew that the children of a family I do a little cooking for would love this dish. They did. It turned out great. This is a dish that can be assembled ahead and stored in the fridge, or you can whip it together in about 30 … [Read more...]

Doughtie’s Barbeque
Sometimes you just want a barbeque: A whole hog chopped up into small bits of goodness and seasoned with pepper and vinegar. Maybe a little smokiness in the taste. When that happens to me – and I’m not anywhere Lexington or Greenville, NC – I go to Kroger’s, buy a package of Doughtie’s BBQ and I’m in business. Doughtie’s is easily the best packaged barbeque of all. Surprisingly, … [Read more...]
Coldwater Tips for Winter Smallmouth
By Bruce Ingram Angling for Virginia’s wintertime rivers smallmouth is a paradox. The cold weather period is perhaps both the best time to catch trophy bronze-backs and the most likely time for fishermen not to even receive one bite. Here are tips from three well-known state anglers on how to experience more of the former and less of the latter. Willis' Mike Smith offers this … [Read more...]
Almost Over
The season for rockfish is almost over in Virginia. Only one more week, but lots of big fish, 40 and 50 pounders, have turned right into Bay waters on their way south. The big fellas are looking for live eels, but they’ll also bust into umbrella rigs if given the chance. Lots of slot fish are hitting at the mouth of the Rapp and along the CBBT. Trout fishimng is solid, with some pups in the … [Read more...]
A Beckley Christmas
I had just turned 10 and would spend this Christmas in our new house on Jennings Street in Beckley, WV. I had made a Little League team that year, loved my Fourth-Grade teacher and Freddie Arnold had just moved in just down the street. I now had a built-in baseball, football, and basketball buddy. Life was good. As Christmas approached, there was one thing I really wanted – an English bike. My … [Read more...]
An (Almost) Christmas Cactus
For 11 months, our little house plant sits in the corner, biding its time. Then, at Christmas, it goes into full bloom. It is, after all, a Christmas Cactus. Except, our little plant gets excited when the Christmas lights go up, and Christmas music echoes throughout the house. Then he blooms prematurely, sometimes as early as Thanksgiving. This year, our plant held off till early December to … [Read more...]
Aldi Comes Through
Cooking for a couple families, I am in one of our grocery stores almost every day. Kroger’s is across the street, so I visit them frequently. I like Wal-Mart because their prices are super low. I also push a cart up and down the aisles of Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Whole Foods, and Sam’s Club. Charlottesville has a relatively new grocery store, Aldi, and at first, I wasn’t impressed. I saw their … [Read more...]
