Tomatoes and Eggs

April 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Doesn’t sound very appetizing, does it? That’s because you don’t necessarily eat eggs with tomatoes, you put the eggshells in and on the ground when you plant tomatoes. If you do, you’ll grow more and larger tomatoes and eliminate or reduce those black spots on the first fruits. I didn’t do well in chemistry, but I know that calcium, especially calcium carbonate, is a great additive to the … [Read more...]

Potted Plant Bird Nests

April 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Nancy saw some potted plants on sale last week at Lowe’s and bought a couple. We have a perfect place to hang them on our front porch and she put them there. Within an hour, a pair of house finches saw the plants and deemed the one on the right as worthy of a bird’s nest, and so it is. A bird’s nest. “They’re not going to like it when I have to water,” Nancy said, but she left the nesting birds … [Read more...]

Dairy Queen ‘Dogs

April 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

When you need a Hot Dog, you need a Hot Dog. Not Mac and Cheese, not a T-bone Steak, not a large Pepperoni Pizza - you need a Hot Dog. Nothing else will do. Last Sunday, a Frankfurter craving overpowered me, and I was off to one of the few great places in mighty Cville to get a Hot Dog, and that would be Dairy Queen at Forest Lakes. Some of my fondest childhood memories were of special … [Read more...]

Springtime: A Colorful Favorite

April 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B   Easter has come and gone but Spring flowers are abundant and beautiful. Have you noticed all the different colors of Spring flowers? They are cheerful and bright and make us happy. And so, it is with colorful residential lighting as well. Spring is a time of renewal and excitement, a time to make changes and prepare for new beginnings. Wouldn’t new pendant lights over … [Read more...]

OBX On Fire!

April 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

If you are heading to the OBX in the near future, you picked the right time. Fishing in the surf, the sounds and offshore is on fire. How about the huge bluefish above caught in the surf? It’s like old times. The red drum bite at the Point in Buxton has been phenomenal, with many anglers scoring big fish and earning citations at local tackle shops. You can also find plenty of puppy drum, … [Read more...]

Tips on Catching Shad

April 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Photos and Article By Mark Fike   Shad darts and spoons are the traditional go-to for targeting shad, those acrobatic silver fish. I used them for years and never thought about trying something different. But sometimes change can have some very positive results. These days, I rarely use shad darts. Instead, my go-to rig is a crappie jig weighted with a split shot pinched on … [Read more...]

Old Family Recipes: Genuine Treasures

April 13, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Some of the greatest treasures we have are old family recipes, traditions passed from one generation to the next. Many of these old recipes can date back a hundred years and more. They connect us to our past. My wife Nancy has accumulated a thick volume of these priceless wonders. Nancy married into a family of incredible cooks. Not me. All I could cook when we first married were hamburgers, … [Read more...]

When To Plant Tomatoes

April 13, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Last week, within 2 days, we alternately turned on our air conditioner and then our gas logs. April weather can be strange indeed, which poses problems for back yard gardeners. Though the air may feel warm, the soil temperature may well be still too cool, and a sudden late frost is always a possibility. Planting tomatoes and peppers too early in cooler temperatures can cause stunted growth, … [Read more...]

Be Aware of The Alpha-Gal Tick

April 13, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Emily Strother   In 2019, I contracted a red meat allergy–known as alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) or allergy—from a tick bite I got while hunting turkeys that spring. As a gal who enjoys hunting and experimenting with wild game in the kitchen, realizing that I could no longer consume venison or other mammal meat was a hard pill to swallow. Besides a fried piece of deer tenderloin over the … [Read more...]
