Bluebird Candy

January 12, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I have discovered bluebird candy. Well, not actually candy, but my little blue feathered friends eat it like a bag of Tootsie Rolls and Reese’s Cups on a Halloween night. My daughter, Angelin, knowing that I love bluebirds, gave me a bag of Birdacious Bark Butter Bits for Christmas. At first skeptical, I put a cupful in my open end, glass bowl bird feeder and the blues were on it like … [Read more...]

Laying Golden Eggs

January 12, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Remember the old Aesop’s Fable, “The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs”? To refresh your memory, there was once a goose that laid a solid gold egg every day for a peasant man and his wife, which made them quite wealthy. But the couple got greedy and killed the goose to get all the eggs inside at once. There were none, of course, and now the Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs was dead. If … [Read more...]

Giant Bluefins Have Arrived

January 12, 2023 by Jim Brewer

There is still plenty of fishing action to be had on the Outer Banks. The Giant Bluefin Tuna showed up out of Oregon Inlet late last week, soon after the reopening of the commercial season. Along with the Bluefin, there have been reports of Yellowfin, Kings, Wahoo, and some really nice Blackfin. Jake Worthington and Garrett Grant were working on the Afishionado this past weekend looking … [Read more...]

And Obey the Pack Laws

January 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

What Boomer can ever forget that first uniform of his or her youth, likely from being a member of a Cub Scout or Brownie troop. I clearly recall that royal blue shirt with the bright yellow kerchief, my Cub Scout uniform in 4th grade. As a new scout recruit, I was fascinated by the badges and emblems, and I wanted as many as I could pin or have Mom sew on my uniform. They didn’t cost that much, … [Read more...]

Finley’s Service Center

January 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

When you don’t know a carburetor from a gas cap, you are at the mercy of whoever it is that works on your car. Many auto repair shops, especially those at the major dealerships, work on set fees and commissions, so it’s in their interest to find things wrong with your car, or things that might go wrong. There is only one shop I trust implicitly when my car needs attention, and that’s … [Read more...]

A Golf Ball for Duffers

January 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The golf pros endorse this ball or that one because of spin and that they perform better on the greens. The greens? When the pros speak of greens, they mean hitting the ball close to the flagstick on no worse than the second shot. It sometimes takes me that many to get to ladies’ tees. They also may suggest another brand because it goes high, spins on command, and responds well to wedges. All … [Read more...]

Publix – A Most Friendly Store

January 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

We have lots of grocery shopping choices here in Charlottesville, but we don’t have a Publix, and I for one wish we did. My first shopping experience with a Publix store was in Myrtle Beach. It happened to be the closest store to my brother’s condo and, naturally, I made several trips. I was totally amazed in one visit when I saw the meat department manager out in the aisles chatting with … [Read more...]

5-Cent Bags

January 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

It hit the grocery store fans on January 1. There is now a 5-cent fee on those little brown plastic bags, and many customers were caught off guard. Some though the grocery stores were simply gouging while others argued with store cashiers about the fairness of it all. A few remembered the county had so decreed nearly a year ago. And now customers must pay a nickel for every bag they stuff their … [Read more...]

Ground Turkey Soup

January 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I was trying for turkey chili, but it ended up more like a ground turkey soup – and it was good. After ballooning in weight from Christmas to New Years, I was going for something healthy. Ground turkey is healthy – very little fat and not enough calories to put weight on a spider. Sort of feeling my way through the process, I began by sautéing 2 stalks of chopped celery and about a half of chopped … [Read more...]
