It’s time to catch a few togs’. Tautogs, the fish. They don’t mind the cold weather if you don’t. They put up a decent fight, and they are good to eat. Some big tautogs are now being caught on the ocean wrecks. Dr. Ken Neill successfully fished the triangle wrecks with Johnny Boyd over the weekend. They kept a few big ones and tagged and released the rest. Four already had tags in … [Read more...]
The Golden Age of Comic Books
It is said that the Golden Age of Comic Books was from 1938 to 1956. As a child in the early 50s, I was an avid reader. As I recall, comic books sold for about 10 cents a copy, which was no small sum in those days. It was a week’s allowance for me, and I often blew the whole she-bang to read the adventures of Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel, Captain America, the hero stories of World … [Read more...]
C. L. Day
It’s the most stressful day of the month. It’s C. L. Day, the day the Cleaning Lady comes to our house. A week before C.L. (Cleaning Lady) Day, my wife hands me a list of chores. It reads like this. - Clean off the top of your dresser and dust it. - Check under the bed for house slippers and any dust bunnies. - Take out the trash cans in every room and clean them with … [Read more...]
My Huge Iron Skillet
When we went to Atlanta to spend Christmas with my son, Jimmie, and his family, I fell in love with his 14-inch cast iron skillet. It was made by Green Egg to go on his grill for baking or cooking. But Jimmie used it inside as well. He could put nearly a whole pound of bacon in the thing and have space between the strips. I have an 8-inch chicken fryer at home that I love, but it is limited … [Read more...]
Italian Meatloaf
Meatloaf is one of the ultimate comfort foods. It was a staple at our house where Mom topped her loaves with tomato paste. When I married Nancy, she and her family had always used catsup. It took me a while to adapt, but I eventually came to enjoy meatloaf with onions, eggs, and breadcrumbs inside and lots of catsup on top. The sandwiches were perhaps better than the original … [Read more...]
A Bumper Crop of Pine Cones
There were once 4 large pine trees behind our fence line. There are now two, but last fall they literally rained down pine cones. We have lived in our house for 50 years and I have never seen so many pine cones. There were hundreds of cones in our yard and ten times that many directly beneath the huge trees. I played golf at Greene Hills last week and noticed that the fairways and the … [Read more...]
Invasive House Sparrows
I have a fly-through bowl feeder just outside our den window, primarily to entertain Foster, our parakeet. Foster chirps and tweets and hops from bar to bar in her cage when the various birds fly in and out for a bit of seed. Something that got my attention, however, was that the house sparrows dominated other birds of that size, most notably my bluebirds. I didn’t realize how aggressive … [Read more...]
Tuna and Walleye
Doing outdoor reports this year is like handing out “Frying With Lard” brochures at a Weight Watcher’s Convention. It’s pretty slim pickings out there. The giant bluefin tuna re still frolicking off the Outer Banks and walleye are gearing up to spawn in freshwater. In the Bay, some huge rockfish remain, though it’s catch and release until June. Small stripers and specks are hitting in … [Read more...]
Good Golly Miss Molly
His name was Richard Wayne Penniman. We all knew him as Little Richard, one of the most dynamic entertainers of all time and an idol of Boomers everywhere. Richard Penniman was born in Macon, Ga, the third of twelve children of Leva and Charles Penniman, a church deacon and brick mason who sold a little moonshine on the side. The youngster was dubbed L’il Richard by his family because of his … [Read more...]
Bodo’s: An Excellent Choice
I happened to be in the parking lot behind Bodo’s on Preston Avenue this week and could see in the back of the restaurant where all the workers were busy assembling and serving up the famous Bodo’s Bagels. It was like watching a symphony. Each worker moved quickly and precisely to and from their stations. One delivered a fresh batch of bagels from the oven while another sliced the bagels and … [Read more...]
