Boar’s Head for Fine Dining

July 27, 2023 by Jim Brewer

When we think of going out to a nice, local restaurant, lots of names pop up, but not Boar’s Head. Somehow, I think of that as a touristy sort of place, and it never comes into play as a potential dining destination. Last weekend, however, we attended an event at Boar’s Head running from 7:30 to 9 so we had to grab a bite before the show and Nancy chose the Mill Room at Boar’s Head. Wow! It … [Read more...]

How to be a Better Putter

July 27, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Being a good putter is easy if you know the secret. The secret is to buy a new putter. I have an antique Titleist blade-type putter I bought in 1962 that has missed its share of 3 footers over the years. But when it started missing 2 footers on a regular basis, I went to Dick’s Sporting, checked out one of those new-fangled putters with lines and red dots and a blade only slightly … [Read more...]

Holy King and Spanish Mackerel

July 27, 2023 by Jim Brewer

It was an excellent week for mackerel fishing in the bay and along the Virginia Beach Coast. Charter boats were raking in the Spanish and the kings are also beginning to show. There were numerous ribbonfish caught alongside of the mackerel. Red Drum and cobia are in many areas; some anglers are having fun sight-casting for them. Black drum are hanging around the CBBT islands as well. … [Read more...]

Snakehead Update

July 27, 2023 by Jim Brewer

So, what about all those invasive Northern Snakehead fish that were supposed to wipe out Virginia’s bass population? Turns out that even though their range is spreading, they are not a direct threat to any of our native species. According to the DWR, Virginia officials are reporting more findings of the Northern Snakehead fish. Biologists have confirmed the presence of the fish in a … [Read more...]

Boomers and Campbell’s Pork N Beans

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I was in the canned goods section of the grocery store last week when I saw – on the top shelf – a display of Campbell’s Pork and Beans. I had not had any in years, so I plucked off a can, plopped it in my cart and the memories swirled. When I was a kid, we had pork and beans probably at least once a week – they went with everything, especially chicken, burgers, and hot dogs. They were … [Read more...]

Tomatoes for a Midnight Snack

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Luck plays an important part for backyard gardeners. Not only luck with the weather and timely rains, but the luck of the draw when planting seeds or young plants. I had room for 4 tomato plants this spring and wanted one to be a cherry-type vine for snacks and salads. I saw a plant at Cornerstone Nursery that looked healthy and had “cherry-something” on the sticker, so I bought it, … [Read more...]

Buttermilk English Muffins

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I saw them in the bread aisle on my last grocery store excursion – Buttermilk English Muffins from Thomas, the clear frontrunner in English Muffins. They sounded good and I picked up a package. They were good, and from now on, this will be my muffin of choice. They make delicious toast when slathered with butter and set beneath a broiler, and they also make great sandwiches. And they are very easy … [Read more...]

Butter Corn

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The corn’s a’coming. Fresh corn on the cob. Tis the season for sure. There are dozens and dozens of ways to cook corn on the cob and I’ve never tried a recipe that wasn’t good. Baked, boiled, steamed, grilled? Fresh, sweet corn on the cob? How can you go wrong? But recently I saw a recipe from Spicey Southern Kitchen that is likely to go to the front of the line in my recipe cards. It’s … [Read more...]

Sunflower Chips

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

More than ever, you should be putting sunflower hearts or chips in your feeder/feeders. It’s one of the few seeds that all young birds can eat. That’s because the sunflower husk has been removed and it’s basically a fruit. The chips and hearts are a little pricey and when there were 10,000 grackles hammering away, I had to stop using chips or take out a second mortgage. But they are gone now, … [Read more...]

“Jug o’ rum! Jug o’ rum!”

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

We have a bullfrog in our pond. We can hear him croak from time to time. Not the deep bass “Jug o’ rum! Jug o’ rum!” that a mature bullfrog makes. But a nice fat croak. I think this bull frog was a late developing tadpole from a half dozen bullfrog tadpoles we bought about a year ago. Most of the tadpoles became frogs quickly, then seemed to vanish, but “Billy Bull” hung in there and now … [Read more...]
