The speckled trout bite is on fire. The sleek fish are shallow and they’re hungry. Some huge fish are being caught in Little Creek, the Elizabeth River, the Piankatank River, the Rappahannock River, and many of the shallow creeks feeding these waters. Puppy drum are coming from the same spots. Nighttime has been the right time for rockfish. They love to snuggle up to bridges and … [Read more...]
The Greatest Show on Earth
And it was. When the Barnum and Bailey and Ringling Bros. circus came to town, it was the Greatest Show on Earth, and an event that every Boomer child looked forward to seeing. It all started when the Ringling brothers traveled to New England to see the established Barnum and Bailey Circus. The two circuses then agreed to divide the U.S. rather than compete head-to-head. The Ringling’s … [Read more...]

Maple Dijon Drumsticks
I was in Kroger’s this week and saw a family pack of chicken drumsticks for five bucks. I hadn’t planned on drumsticks for a meal, but this was too good to pass up and I happen to like drumsticks. There were a dozen fat chicken legs in the package, enough for 2 meals. $2.50 a meal for 2 people? You can’t beat that in these days of spiraling inflation. Now, what to do with all these … [Read more...]
Charlotte’s Web
A few weeks back, Nancy and I were treated to a live production of one of nature’s most amazing shows. We watched a spider at work. My wife is not afraid of many things. I once saw her try to catch a snake with her bare hands in our goldfish pond. But Nancy is definitely afraid of spiders. If there is one around, she knows about it. We were sitting on the porch at our rental cottage at … [Read more...]
Little San Francisco
Charlottesville is not yet in the same class as San Francisco as far as the prevalence of street junkies, filth, and drugs, but Mr. Jefferson’s town is making progress. Where there once was an historically significant statue of one of the greatest military generals of all time, there is now a cluster of tents in a city park. The newly hired City Manager, Sam Sanders, removed the park’s 11 p.m. … [Read more...]
Homemade Ziplocs
We go through Ziplocs at our house like Taylor Swift does boyfriends. Sometimes we’ll put old Ziplocs in new ones. Not really, but we use a lot of these convenient little storage bags. Since Charlottesville imposed a nickel tax on those little brown bags you get at grocery stores, our Ziploc usage has increased. I hated those bags for groceries, but they were often handy for storage of certain … [Read more...]
It’s King Mac Time
Fall is a great time for fishing. The Bay water temperature has decreased to 68 degrees, which makes fish more active, especially King Mackerel. Some nice Kings were caught off Virginia Beach last week. They require good tackle and live baits are best. Kings are very strong and fast and will smoke your drag! They can weigh up to 50 pounds and offer a great challenge. The rockfish season is in … [Read more...]
Catch and Release Best Practices
By Alex McCrickard/DWR Avoid fighting striped bass to exhaustion. Make sure you have a heavy enough rod and associated tackle to land the fish relatively quickly, especially if you are targeting trophy-sized striped bass. A large rubber net can be beneficial when landing striped bass. This will allow you to keep the fish wet while you prepare to remove the lure, fly, or hook. This also … [Read more...]
Stripers!
By Alex McCrickard/DWR It’s easy to understand why striped bass are known as “everyman’s fish.” They’re fun to catch and are one of the most accessible fish for anglers to target. Add on the variety of different methods you can use to successfully catch striped bass—live bait, trolling, bottom fishing, artificial lures, and fly fishing—it’s easy to understand why they are referred to … [Read more...]
