Eggs have gotten so expensive that Kroger’s had to install an ATM machine beside the Dairy and Egg department. Some shoppers put a carton of eggs on layaway and pay for them over time. But the price of chicken hasn’t risen to such astronomical heights – yet. Chicken wings are and remain ridiculously priced, because of high demand for Buffalo Wings (especially near Super Bowl time), but leg quarters are well within reach – a great buy, actually. I bought a 10-pound bag of leg quarters last week for $6.50. There were 8 quarters overall, making 4 meals for the two for us. That’s about a buck and a half for a meal. You can’t beat that. I cooked two quarters the first night and put my trusty Food Saver to use with three additional packs in the freezer.
I feel sorry for all those “white meat only” folks who buy only breasts. A 6-pack of boneless, skinless breasts will run $12 or more per pack. But us leg-and-thigh guys can feast for a pittance.
If you look and shop around, you can still save a lot of money on groceries. That’s why I would never, ever let anybody do my grocery shopping for me.
