Luck plays an important part for backyard gardeners. Not only luck with the weather and timely rains, but the luck of the draw when planting seeds or young plants.
I had room for 4 tomato plants this spring and wanted one to be a cherry-type vine for snacks and salads. I saw a plant at Cornerstone Nursery that looked healthy and had “cherry-something” on the sticker, so I bought it, luckily.
The vines first produced small, green tomatoes, then they changed to a dark purple. Would I be eating purple tomatoes?
Nope, they then change to a deep red with burgundy markings when they are fully ripe.
They are called Midnight Snack Cherry Tomatoes. And they do make great snacks. The little guys have a rich, balanced flavor – not too sweet, not too acidic. They are perfect to pop in your mouth for a snack anytime. They are also (so far) completely free of blemishes, one of their attributes. They grow in clusters of 8 to 10. I don’t think they will be as prolific as some of my cherry tomato vines in the past, but I am seeing a continuous supply and they are delicious. If I can luckily find them again next year, I’ll plant another vine or maybe even two.
Midnight Snack Tomatoes: Remember that name.
