Seeing that first seed sprout, whether it’s in the garden or a Jiffy Pot in the windowsill, is always exciting. It’s a marvel of nature, really. Imagine a seemingly dead seed coming to life a couple inches beneath the earth, then pushing its way upward through much heavier soil and thrusting itself into the new world. The tiny sprout has everything it will need to grow and develop into a large plant and ultimately produce fruit or vegetables along with new seeds to continue the process.
My first seeds in my Jiffy pots came to life this week – the tiny yellow squash sprouts were the first to appear.
I have started a few cucumbers, the yellow squash and hopefully some spaghetti squash indoors, but Nancy has about a hundred little pots filled with enough veggies to stock Kroger’s.
I did something a little different this year. Rather than filling the Jiffy pots to the brim, I filled them about ¾ full and as the seeds grow taller, I’ll add more soil so hopefully they won’t get too spindly. Then it’s waiting game until Ol’ Man Frost is in the rearview window.
I can’t wait to get my little seed sprouts in the ground.
