I am chomping at the bit to start digging in my garden. I have planted a few peas, beets, onion sets and lettuce, but I must bide my time before the summer garden goes in.
Still, that doesn’t stop me from buying garden toys, and I have a new one – a cucumber trellis.
I have found that most cucumber vines like to climb if there is something nearby to cling to. They’re up and at ‘em like Jack in the Bean Stalk Vines and will climb as high as the nearest fence.
I saw a trellis on Amazon that looked good. It is 6 feet tall, and you can plant on either side, easily sewing 6 cucumber hills which will then climb the trellis.
A trellis makes harvesting a piece of cake. You can easily see the cucumbers, for one thing, and they don’t grow 2-feet long while hiding beneath the leaves. It also discourages ground pests – like squirrels and chipmunks. The cukes themselves are cleaner and nicer since they stay out of the dirt. Plus, the raised trellises allow more plants per square foot.
The trellis is also good for pole beans, melons, and other climbing plants. I am eager to use it.
