I now have corn rows – not in my hair, in my garden. I planted 4 very short rows and am hoping for the best. I needed something to replace my early harvest of sweet peas. Green beans would have been a more sensible choice, but I gambled with bi-color corn. Corn does better when it’s planted with lots of other corn, side by side, so I planted my 4 baby rows about a foot apart. Hopefully there will be cross-pollination or whatever corn does to make it happen. The bag of seed said about 72 days till harvest, so we’ll see.
Corn needs rain, especially when the plants are young, so a sprinkling here and there will definitely help.
Overall, my garden is doing well. For starters, and thanks to my Deer Busters Fence, the squirrels didn’t immediately dig up all the seeds and a chicken wire ground fence has kept the thieving rabbits at bay.
I had good lettuce, a nice batch of sweet peas, a few strawberries that the chipmunks didn’t get and I plucked my first squash and first cucumber yesterday, and those plants are prospering. Fresh cucumbers, by the way, don’t need anything else. Just peel, slice and eat. They are dynamite when eaten as they are and fresh-picked.
My peppers look good, the okra is doing well, and the tomato vines are coming along. Best of all, I planted two rows of Ford Hook Limas and they are thriving.
If I can just get a couple ears of corn fresh off the stalks, it will have all been worthwhile.
