One perk of being a backyard gardener is that you never know what might pop up. Volunteer plants, for example. One year, I had a strange plant sprout and could not for the life of me figure out what it was. We let it grow to maturity, and finally pulled it up. It was a peanut vine compliments of my resident squirrels
This summer, I have another unknown addition to my garden. I thought at first it was a cucumber, but then the vine began to sprawl and climb, scaling an 8-foot wire fence. It bloomed, but no fruits. But finally, I saw some fruits of some sort appear. They may ne watermelons or honeydews or who knows what, but there are fruits on the vines, and some are six feet above ground and clinging to the fence. If they’re watermelons, I’d say those vines won’t hold them. Even if they are ‘lopes or honeydews, the vines haver their work cut out for them.
I doubt with the approaching fall that they will make it to fruition, but it will be interesting to finally find out what this strange plant is. With a backyard garden, you never know.
