Last week, we found ourselves in Virginia Beach for a short getaway. We had planned to stay someplace in Norfolk since a visit to Norfolk Botanical Gardens was at the top of our agenda. But we had actually dared to drive to the beach without reservations. It was a Sunday, so how busy could they be down there? Plenty busy, it turns out. Many hotels were booked and the ones that weren’t seemed to be gouging on prices. We drove by a hotel called The Capes, on Atlantic Avenue, right on the beach and in the middle of all the action. They had a room available, there was complimentary and convenient parking, it was reasonably priced and we checked in. It was a great decision. The Capes Hotel is an ideal venue for a short hop, or even a lengthier stay at Virginia Beach.
For starters, every room has an oceanfront balcony. Porpoises entertained us throughout our stay. Secondly, the staff was extremely friendly, eager to make our stay as comfortable as possible. We had everything we needed. The rooms were well appointed, clean and comfortable, each with a microwave and refrigerator. The location – in the heart of the beach and overlooking the boardwalk – was perfect.
The Capes had a convenient ocean front grill downstairs serving fresh seafood, burgers and sandwiches. The breakfast menu was extensive and priced most reasonably. Shopping, restaurants and plenty of stores were within walking distance. We had a fried seafood dinner deluxe at the restaurant at the pier near Rudee Inlet. It was scrumptious.
Other amenities at the Capes Hotel include WiFi, laundry facilities, coffee makers, hair dryers, iron and ironing boards and a whirlpool bathtub in many rooms. There is an indoor pool and, of course, instant beach access.
The Capes Hotel is located at 2001 Atlantic Avenue. Call them at 800-456-5421 or go to capeshotel.com.
