For our 50thwedding anniversary on March 3 last year, Nancy and I went on a cruise to Hawaii. It was magnificent. This year, we stayed a little closer to home since we only had two days to get away.
Nancy said, “Surprise me.”
It had to be near water, since we are both enchanted with those water views. We love Nags Head, the Eastern Shore and anyplace with the smell of salt water in the air. We also enjoy Lake Norman in North Carolina and Harman’s North Fork Cottages in West Virginia, but again, we only had two days. I decided on Smith Mountain Lake, we drove over on March 2 and we had a great time.
Lake Anna is the closest major body of water to Charlottesville, but Anna doesn’t really have any nice places to stay, other than a few Airbnb homes. Most of their rentals are fisherman-type places. Nothing wrong with that if you’re fishing with your buds, but for an anniversary get-away? Not so much.
Smith Mountain Lake is only a two-hour drive from Charlottesville and offers lots and lots of rental homes and condos. There is seemingly a major condo in every cove. There are also lots of things to do in and around Smith Mountain Lake ranging from fishing and golf to shopping, wine tours and some great restaurants. This edition of Cville Buzz will be a travel guide, of sorts, to Smith Mountain Lake.
