I had the opportunity to take a road trip over Labor Day to Lake Norman, just north of Charlotte, NC. The reservoir happens to be the largest man-made body of fresh water in the Tarheel state. Along its 520 miles of shoreline are many magnificent homes and one spectacular golf course – The Trump National Golf Club of Charlotte. I would be playing golf there for two days with my brothers, Charlie, a member, and Pat, from Charleston, so we had room for another golfer. I was hoping The Donald himself might be available and join us, but the Golf Pro said he was preoccupied. I think they said he was in Iowa.
So we played as a threesome. What a course!
Once called The Point, the course was designed by Greg Norman. Jason Mull is the Director of Golf and what a job James Sowers has done as Golf Superintendent.
This part of North Carolina has been under severe drought conditions all summer, but you wouldn’t know it at this Trump course. The Bermuda fairways and greens were lush. The tee boxes were perfect and the greens were wickedly evil. On the second day I finally stopped putting the ball twenty feet past the hole and had a decent round. But the course was a joy to play. Trump National can play as long as 7,425 yards, but I played from the forward tees where I could keep up with my longer-hitting and much younger brothers. The course wiggles around the lagoons and inlets of Lake Norman, which now has a number of my golf balls resting peacefully on the bottom.
Lake Norman is a 32,500-acre impoundment with great fishing for catfish, striped bass, largemouth bass, crappie and bream. The lake was formed in the early 60’s with Cowans Dam and is fed primarily by the Catawba River.
If you get an opportunity, visit Lake Norman and if you’re a golfer, find a way to play Trump National. If The Donald could run this country like he runs his golf courses, America really could be great again.
