A Grand Slam home run is when you clear all the bases with a mighty blow. A Grand Slam in golf is a sweep of The Masters, PGA, the US Open and the British Open. A Grand Slam in the Gulf Stream is to land a Blue Marlin, a White Marlin, and a Sailfish on the same trip. An Inshore Grand Slam means you caught all three of the mighty sportfish back in the sounds – a Bluefish, a Speckled Trout, and a Red Drum,
Young Parker Griffen, a ten-year old from Richmond, did just that. He caught bluefish, Speckled Trout and Puppy Drum on a fishing expedition with Capt. Reese Stecher with Beach Bum Fishing.
Stecher, who fishes out of Oregon Inlet has been have consistent success throughout the summer and things look most promising for fall on the Outer Banks.
“We’re catching lots of Speckled Tout on both poppers and jigs,” he said. “There are lots of drum to site cast to on pretty days and we catch then on cut bait on windy days.”
Stecher’s parties have also been boating nice bluefish to 5-punds and more and there are plenty of sheepshead at the bridges. The advantage of Inshore fishing is that when it’s too rough to sail to the blue waters, the sound waters are fishable. You can also get in a half-day trip and not spend an entire day on a long boat ride and it’s only a small portion of the cost of a Gulf Stream trip.
