Within a few weeks after installing our new goldfish pond this spring, our 8 original goldfish grew to 16, then 24. Our 4 year-old fish had spawned at least twice. I read that goldfish could actually spawn once a month between May and August and we wondered if the goldfish stork might deliver even more. Well, he did. There is one (that we can see) tiny little goldfish, born in the last week or so. He’s about the size of a decent teardrop and he stays well up into the shallows to avoid predators, like our 4 bullfrogs. They would dearly love to have this little one for a meal.
Currently, our goldfish inventory stands at 7 adults and about 13 or 14 young ones, plus the single newborn. Of the group of offspring, one is a light pink, seven are gold, two are a combination of black and gold and 3 or 4 are either black or dark gray.
Yet, none of the original adults have a speck of black among them. It has certainly been fun feeding the fish and watching them grow and prosper.
If you install a pond this fall, by next spring you can also be counting goldfish, frogs and perhaps new arrivals.
