You can make good tuna salad with a couple cans of ordinary tuna fish. Or you can make Killer Tuna Fish Salad with StarKist Solid White Albacore in Vegetable Oil. The difference is like a Kia compact compared to a Mercedes Benz Convertible Roadster. There is really no comparison.
Regular tuna fish, usually packed in water, is less than a buck for a small can, which is why many use that in their salads. But it is lower quality. The larger, 12-oz. cans of Albacore – solid, white, delicious tuna – are a bit over $4, but they are worth it.
Also, there is a difference in Chunk White Albacore Tuna and Solid White. The Chunk White Albacore Tuna is packed with smaller chunks that are mild in flavor, but the Solid White has a less fishy taste. Both are good sources of protein and natural omega oils. Tuna packed in vegetable oil is also much more flavorful than that packed in water, and vegetable oil is mild.
To make my Killer Tuna Salad, I used 2 of the 12-ounce cans of StarKist Solid White Tuna in Vegetable Oil and added two, chopped, hard-boiled eggs, a half-cup of mayonnaise, 1/3 C of sweet pickle relish, 1/3 C finely diced sweet onion and salt and pepper. It’s best when mixed, then stored in the refrigerator for a couple hours. I like mine on bread as a great sandwich. But Nancy likes to spread hers on Ritz crackers. Being less fishy, it also makes a wonderful salad on a bed of lettuce.
Bottom line. It’s worth the $4 and change for a gourmet can of tuna. Remember, Star Kist Solid White Albacore in Vegetable Oil. It’s well worth the extra money.
