We had a last minute cook out last weekend, with dogs and burgers as the featured entrees. I am a hot dog fanatic and looked forward to the makeshift picnic supper.
But….
I was out of hot dog chili. I usually make it in advance and store small containers in the freezer, but I was out and didn’t have time to make a fresh batch. Eating a hot dog without good chili is like….well, eating a hot dog without good chili. It sucks!
There are several canned hot dog chilis on the market, Campbell’s is decent. But I wanted better than decent and I found it. Tar Heel Brand Hot Dog Chili Sauce. It was in Kroger’s in the refrigerated section where they keep pimento cheese and Cole slaw.
Tar Heel Brand Chili is produced by Asheville Packing Company in Flat Rock, NC, in Henderson County, northwest of Charlotte. It’s a meat packing company that produces and packages its own meats and sauces. The chili comes in 12-ounce plastic containers, like pimento cheese. Mind you, it’s not as good as my homemade chili, but it’s close.
Next time you’re serving hot dogs, if you need a very good chili sauce and don’t have time to make it, pick up a container of Tar Heel Brand Chili Sauce. It’s about $3.99 at Kroger’s and it’s pretty good stuff!
