Nancy said she was going to heat up some oyster stew, so I had to fend for myself as far as dinner was concerned. But I also had to pick up my daughter from the airport at 6:30, so I either needed to do a fast-food pickup or cook something that I could just heat and eat.
I had to go to Kroger’s anyway, and decided to buy some pre-made BBQ, but Doughties, the brand I like, was not in stock. They did have some BBQ from a company called Brookwood Farms. I read the label to see where it was made. If it wasn’t Carolina BBQ, I wanted nothing to do with it, but it was made in Siler City, NC, a small town featured in several Andy Griffith shows. Siler City was also the hometown of Aunt Bee, located between Raleigh and Asheboro, in the heart of Carolina BBQ country.
So, I bought it and it was really good – very high quality with lots of lean pork and seasoned just right.
Brookwood Farms BBQ was founded in 1978. Each batch of their BBQ is slow roasted over hickory charcoals, overnight, in fact. The next day they pull the pork, season it and package it. The BBQ is really heat-and-serve, but I put mine in a small sauce pan and added about a cup of vinegar and let it cook down. When I got back from the airport, it was piping hot. I piled it high on a bun and added some cole slaw and I thought for a minute I could hear Andy asking Opie if he wanted to go fishing.
If you like Carolina-style BBQ, you’ll like Brookwood Farms.
