I don’t shop often at Harris Teeter. It’s a little out of the way and I find it pricey, but when I do, I look for their Argentine Shrimp. They make the trip worthwhile.
Harris Teeter is one of the few stores that regularly stocks Argentine Shrimp. As advertised, these shrimp are wild-caught off the coast of Patagonia, in Argentina. They are also known as Wild Red Shrimp and Patagonian King Prawn.
These naturally red shrimp have a distinct taste, a very delicate texture and a taste of sea. Some say they taste closer to lobster than to shrimp. They are delicious.
So on my last visit to Harris Teeter, I bought a pound and a half, which ended up being way too much for Nancy and me. They are very rich – like lobster – and I can’t eat as many as normal shrimp. They are good boiled, but I decided to grill them and created a marinade of soy sauce, red wine vinegar, olive oil, minced garlic and a bit of sweet and sour sauce.
They grill quickly, about 2 minutes a side, and they were delicious, but I found them even more tasty the next night. I had bought 6 mid-sized portabella mushrooms as a baked potato substitute and decided to stuff the mushrooms with the leftover shrimp. I made a garlic butter sauce and chopped up the shrimp to fit inside of the stem-removed mushrooms. I poured the garlic butter over the shrimp and baked in a 350 oven for about 30 minutes. They were out-of-sight delicious.
And a great thing about these shrimp – Harris Teeter generally runs them at less than $10 a pound, and that’s a real deal. Try them. I think they’re better than lobster.
