I love to go to the grocery store. I think it’s a birth defect of some sort – probably in the birth canal too long, but I really enjoy pushing a cart up and down the aisles of Kroger’s, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, or any store that sells groceries.
I cannot fathom having someone pick out my groceries for me, and having to wait outside in one of those designated spots for pick-up delivery. How can a Kroger’s employee pick out the right avocado for guacamole? Would you trust them to select a bartlett pea? Which chuck roast would they choose? How about a cantaloupe? And they don’t take into account what’s on sale: manager’s specials and the like. Grocery prices are going through the roof, in case you haven’t noticed, but an astute (and regular) grocery shopper can still save a pile of money.
For instance.
We had good friends over for dinner and they like – or say they like – my barbeque chicken. As do Nancy and I, they also like dark meat if given the choice. When barbequing, I like to either cook a half chicken or a quarter of a chicken for serving. The larger pieces are juicier when cooked nice and slow.
So off I went grocery shopping. Wal-mart didn’t have I wanted, nor did Food Lion, but Kroger’s did – a 10 pound bag of Chicken Leg Quarters and they were on sale for 79 cents a pound. I bought the whole bag of course and cooked 5 of the leg quarters for dinner that night, then put the others in Food Saver Bags in the freezer. Last night, I retrieved one of the 2 remaining bags with 2 quarters (enough for Nancy me) and made a pot of homemade Chicken Noodle Soup. I’ll likely use the other two as Italian Leg Quarters. Put the chicken in a Zip-loc bag with Zesty Italian Dressing, shake it well to cover and popped in the slow cooker them on low for 4 hours, and that’s it. It just goes to show that the more often you go to the grocery store, the more choices you have and the more you can save on soaring grocery prices.
Plus, it’s fun to go shopping at the grocery store.
