Like many Americans, I spend about an hour in my car on an average day. And like most others, I always have the radio on. If UVA sports is on, I tune that in. If not, I channel surf for music. I had recently been clicking back and forth between a couple of light rock stations, noting that Kelly Clarkson’s Heartbeat Song was played once an hour, every hour. It’s a great song, but every hour?
By accident, I tuned one day to 97.9 FM and my radio dial has since stayed fixed on that station.
WREN, 97.9, The Wren, is a genuine Oldies Station. They play my music – songs from the 50’s and 60’s and a handful of 70’s stuff. Oldies, that’s all they play.
The WREN plays back to back to back hits from the past – Roy Orbison, Patti Page, Ricky Nelson, Chuck Berry, Ben E. King, Brook Benton, Nat King Cole, Neal Diamond, Bobby Darrin, The Ames Brothers…and, you get the picture.
The station began broadcasting this spring. They are a non-profit business and play with no commercials whatsoever, though they do feature a few of their sponsors from time to time, ala public radio.
I can be having a terrible day, tune in WREN and life changes for the better. Cars passing by note that I am singing away, reliving the great songs of days gone by.
If you live in or near Charlottesville, tune to 97.9 FM and enjoy some terrific music.
