Summer has arrived, the birds are nesting and the splendor of Central Virginia is on full display. That means it’s Tanyard time. It’s time to tee it up at the lovely and affordable golf course at Tanyard Country Club in Louisa. For this golfer, Tanyard is a favored destination.
Though thirty miles is not much in the way of a destination, Tanyard is worth every mile of the short drive from Charlottesville, and this player-friendly course is open to the public.
Tanyard is a shot maker’s delight. You don’t have to be a big hitter to score well. If anything, position is as important, if not more so, than a booming drive.
Tanyard has multiple sets of tee markers, measuring 6,434 yards from the back tees, with a par of 72. Tanyard will challenge the low handicapper while allowing the novice to enjoy his or her round at the same time. It is truly a player-friendly golf course. The rough isn’t deep, and the fairway grass is in the best shape in years. The greens are small and demanding, but they are in excellent condition. The tee boxes and fairways at Tanyard are primarily Bermuda grass over-seeded with rye grass in the winter and bent grass on the greens.
To score at Tanyard, you need to get off the tee with a straight shot. Many of the fairways, particularly on the back nine, are tight, with trees on both sides. Keep it in the fairway, get a decent position for an approach and even a duffer like me can have a great round. Overall, it’s a fun course to play. It’s target golf at its best.
Tanyard is a also an ideal venue for business and charity tournaments and outings. The 200-seating capacity pavilion is perfect for catered events or for sharing golf stories after the round.
Amenities include a 15-space driving range extending out to 275 yards and a chipping and putting green. Tanyard is also quite affordable, only $30 with a VSGA card on approved dates. The course also plays quickly. Almost always, golfers can complete their rounds in 4 hours or less.
