It’s my favorite course and I’ve played a lot of courses. It’s Heritage Oaks, a public golf course in Harrisonburg, and it’s fantastic.
I played yesterday with Mike Perry and had one of my best rounds ever. When you enjoy a course and can relax, you play better – like Tiger did at Augusta.
The course was simply beautiful. It was lush and green and in tip-top condition. The tee boxes were spacious and manicured. The greens were in perfect shape. It was simply beautiful.
Heritage Oaks is owned by the City of Harrisonburg and was designed by William Love. The layout offers a wide variety of holes including links-style holes as well as traditional, tree-lined holes. Golfers of all abilities will enjoy playing this picturesque par 70 course as it offers four sets of tees on each hole with overall distances ranging from 4500 yards to 6325 yards.
I played from what my friends call “The Geriatric Tees” but it was fun to hit a decent drive and have a 9-iron to the green on a par 4. The par 3s are mostly friendly – no 200-yarders.
Heritage Oaks is also an extremely friendly course. From the folks who book your tee times to the golf marshals to the maintenance people – everyone is friendly and welcoming.
It’s also an affordable course. It cost us just $26 for 18-holes and our cart with the VSGA card. That makes the hour drive from Charlottesville well worthwhile.
The only downside is that at the end of 18, I sure would have enjoyed a cold one in the club house to celebrate, but I had to settle for a Diet Coke.
The course has been named “Best in the Valley” five times in the past 10 years. I can’t imagine any course in the Valley topping Heritage Oaks.
Fellow golfers, I urge you to play this course.
