Last Saturday evening we found ourselves without an entrée in our fridge (by design), so Nancy and I decided to go out to eat. Nothing fancy, we thought. Maybe Lord Hardwicke’s? We had not eaten there since they closed their doors on Emmett Street, but there was one north of town. Or so we thought.
When we arrived at their former location at a strip mall in Greene County, there was no Lord Hardwicke’s. Another restaurant is coming there, but if Hardwicke’s couldn’t make it, I have my doubts about the next one as well.
So back to town we headed.
How about Timberwood Grill, Nancy suggested. We have eaten there on occasion and it was okay, not great. But we were hungry enough that okay would do. We were pleasantly surprised. The food and service was excellent.
Recently, we have been pulling up stools at the bar when available. The advantage is, first, reservations and beepers in your pocket aren’t necessary, and second, the service is usually much better. That’s because most restaurants have their ace employees as bar tenders, and these folks are very attentive to dining and drinking patrons. Plus, they’re right there in front of you. No need to wait until they happen by.
We were greeted and served immediately with our favorite adult beverages by the head bar tender.
For dinner, we started with Beer Battered Shrimp as an appetizer and it was a huge plate – an entrée-sized portion. I could have eaten half of that and a salad and called it a night, but I had also ordered The Hercules, a French Dip, Shaved Roast Beef Sandwich with French Onion dipping sauce and it was amazing – almost as good as the ones I used to order when David Sloan had his restaurant.
Nancy surprised me and ordered a burger. That was very un-Nancy-like, but she said it was delicious. Nancy had ordered the Patty Melt, a burger with sautéed onions and mushrooms, Swiss cheese and peppercorn mayo on grilled sourdough bread. We both left stuffed.
The prices were reasonable, the food was great and the service that night was top notch.
