Ava and I enjoy eating at new restaurants (plus old restaurants), and we don’t mind driving a distance. We travel to Tappahannock two or three times a year to Lowery’s Seafood Restaurant. That’s a two-hour haul each way. And, once a year, we drive three hours to Palisades Restaurant in the little village of Eggleston, VA (Giles County), west of Blacksburg. On that trip we spend the night at Mountain Lake, 20 minutes away.
Recently, we learned about The County Seat Restaurant in Powhatan. The restaurant has been in business for 25 years, and despite the fact that we live less than an hour away, we did not know about it. I’ve been attending Tilman Auctions in Powhatan for 40 years, and still did not know. A well-hidden secret.
Today, Sunday, August 26, 2018, on the spur-of-the-moment, Ava and I motored over there after church. I live near Cuckoo (Louisa County), so we hopped on Rt. 522 south in down-town Cuckoo, and took that road all the way to Rt. 60 at Powhatan, left (east) on Rt. 60 for about a mile, right on Rt. 10007 a short distance, left on Rt. 13 (Old Buckingham Road), less than a mile to restaurant on the right.
On Sundays, there is no menu. It’s a buffet, all you can eat for $14.95. If you like country, down-home food, this is the place you NEED to visit. All the food is made from scratch, and it is excellent. There are many choices, and regardless of your taste, you will find something you will like:
Table One
Real mashed potatoes
Green beans
Lima beans
Black-eyed peas
Turnip greens
Stewed tomatoes
Mac and cheese
Sweet potatoes
Corn on the cob
Corn pudding
Roast beef
Fried chicken
Yeast rolls
On a second serving table:
Steamed shrimp
Slaw
Sliced ham
Tossed salad
Pickled beets
Marinated cukes/onions
Fruit medley
Customers seat themselves and waitresses keep the drinks filled and remove all used plates while you pig out. The dessert is extra. Ava and I split a slice of homemade coconut pie ala mode. Great !
Friends, believe me when I tell you: The food at The County Seat Restaurant in Powhatan is very good. It’s worth the drive. The restaurant closes at 3:00 PM on Sundays, so plan accordingly. The Sunday buffet is what I recommend because you can sample so many choices. We plan to return. By the way, we did not make reservations.
The County Seat Restaurant is located at 3883 Old Buckingham Road, Powhatan, VA 23139, (804) 598-5000
Enjoy !
