My southern roots go deep. My daddy and his family were raised in Clemmons, just outside Winston Salem. My mother’s people were from Raleigh. My second daddy was from the Wilson area. My closest aunt and uncle were from Charlotte. I grew up eating southern food and enjoying southern hospitality. So it was with great enthusiasm that Nancy and I went to dinner with my daughter Angelin and her husband Brent to a restaurant called Southern Roots. They said it was good and indeed it was.
We were in Greensboro last weekend to see Berkley, our granddaughter, compete in a cheerleading competition. Greensboro is a strange town. You drive for a bit and then cross into High Point, then back into Greensboro, then High Point again and along the way you will likely pass through another town called Jamestown. I never really know which city I’m in, so I call it James-Point-Boro and can’t go wrong. The restaurant, Southern Roots, is in or near Jamestown. If you like southern food, real southern food, this is a must-visit restaurant
We really don’t have a southern-influenced restaurant in Charlottesville. Sure, many of the chefs will do a Shrimp & Grits, a Carolina specialty, but that’s about it.
Check out the side dishes below offered at Southern Roots and you can tell this is genuine southern.
Onion Pie, Lucille’s Cornbread, Sweet Potato Fries, Spaghetti Squash, Collards, Beans, Cheese Grits, Mac & Cheese, Okra, Eggplant Gries, Plantation Slaw, Potato Mash, and Fried Brussel Sprouts. Now that’s southern for you.
For starters we shared a Warm Guida Pimento Cheese Dip and a Rosemary Loaf Bread with Southern Roots Herb Butter. The waitress also brought us a basket of Baked Cornbread. For an entree, I ordered the Carolina Sea Bass in a rich tomato sauce and it was scrumptious. Brent had Cajun Fried Catfish. I had a taste and it was the best catfish I’ve ever eaten. Everything was extraordinary and the prices were most reasonable.
If you find yourself in James-Point-Boro, check out Southern Roots at 119 E. Main Street, located officially in High Point, but it’s really Jamestown. Call (336) 882-5570 for reservations.
