CvilleBuzz reader and contributor, Sherman Shifflet, and I are always on the lookout for new and interesting places to eat. Sherman says he may have found another needle in the haystack.
“Greg Barlow, my hunting buddy for the past 40 years, and I went to Richmond, today, and a friend recommended the Pickle Barrel Restaurant for breakfast,” Sherman noted. “He also said the place was good for lunch and dinner. We recommend this restaurant, but we can only speak for the breakfast. If you are headed to Richmond on I-64 East and get the ‘hungries’ for breakfast, I suggest you consider Pickle Barrel Restaurant. It’s just a stone’s throw from I-64.”
The Pickle Barrel is famous for its breakfasts with a large menu featuring bacon, eggs, sausage, country ham, maple ham, corn beef hash, biscuits and sausage gravy, pancakes, waffles, grits, hash browns and more.
“The food and service were very good and the prices were reasonable,” Sherman noted. “I ordered country ham, scrambled eggs, home fries coffee and toast. Greg had salty fish, scrambled eggs and English muffins. The coffee was good and the waitress kept the cups full. The home fries were deep fried – not quite as good as Tip Top or Michaels – but still good.”
The Henrico County restaurant has also received rave reviews for their seafood platter, especially the fried oysters.
Says one recent visitor: “I ate there last week with my brothers and our meals included flounder, grilled pork chops, fried chicken, bologna burger, fries, kale, mashed potatoes, green beans, peach cobbler and apple cobbler. Yes, we were all full when we left and all items were delicious. Our server was extremely attentive and we’re already planning our next visit.”
The address is 12912 Plaza Drive, Richmond, and the phone number is (804) 708-0166. Sherman says to take the Rockville exit off I-64. Turn right at top of ramp and proceed towards Rt. 250, less than 1/2 mile. Turn right on Plaza Drive and the restaurant will be on the right, behind VALERO.
He adds this: “Yep, I’ll stop there again when I’m in the area.”
