With the holidays in the rear-view mirror, Nancy and I decided to go out for a bite. We thought we’d check out the new Red Crab Juicy Seafood place, but it felt strange when we went in – like an oriental restaurant with a seafood boil. We glanced at their menu, and they seemingly offered only boiled crabs, lobsters, and shrimp. They also sold stuff by the pound. It didn’t feel right. We wanted a quiet, sit-down dinner and we left.
I knew Nancy liked Guadalajara, which was just a few blocks way, I suggested that, and she whole-heartedly agreed. We had a terrific meal, as usual, and a great experience.
Guadalajara is consistently good. They are almost always busy, a sign of a successful restaurant. We were greeted and seated right away, and a server immediately came to set up our table – and brought us those irresistible chips and salsa. I believe the chips are made in-house and the salsa is hot and spicey, but when your mouth stops burning from the first bite, you have to have another and another and another and then the chips are gone, and they bring you more.
The prices at Guadalajara are most reasonable and the portions generous. They offer about every possible Mexican entrée and sandwich. Nancy and I ordered their Burritos (I had a double) and we wolfed down every bite. They offer mixed drinks at reasonable prices and have the best Margaritas in town.
Guadalajara has 4 Charlottesville locations and they’ve been serving up great Mexican food for over 30 years.
The only possible drawback is communication. I believe every employee is a Mexican native and English is definitely a second language, but somehow you can cut through the language barrier, order your dinner, and enjoy an excellent experience. There are never any surprises at Guadalajara. It is consistently excellent.
