About 20 years ago, four of us headed for West Point to fish for croakers in the Mattaponi River. Arriving in town early in the morning, my comrades stopped at a place called Diggs Seafood. I assumed they were going inside to buy bait, but it was lunch they were after.
“You’ve never eaten at Diggs?” someone asked, incredulously.
“Nope. Why?” I responded, as it seemed like a little hole-in-the-wall place with a few glass counters of seafood on display.
“They have the best deviled crabs you have ever put in your mouth,” was the response.
I’m not a big fan of Deviled Crabs, at least I wasn’t until I took my first bite of these delectable morsels freshly cooked at Diggs. My pair of Deviled Crabs didn’t make it to the boat ramp. Yumm! Gone in a flash!
And when we finished fishing that day, with a nice catch of croakers I might add, I made my guys stop at Diggs again to take a half dozen more Deviled Crabs back to Charlottesville. They were, as the old commercial says, indescribably delicious. And so are the Crab Muffins.
West Point is that stinky little town you pass through on the way to the Middle Peninsula, but my friends, it is well worth the ten minute drive off of I-64 into West Point to buy some Deviled Crabs or Crab Muffins at this great local establishment.
Diggs is not really a restaurant, though they have a couple tables. Mostly, people stop by and pick up take-out orders. The specialty at Diggs is crabs and they cook them fresh every day, with local crabs caught in the Mattaponi or York River.
The crab pots will be hitting the water in a few weeks. If you are in or near West Point, stop by Diggs Seafood.
Their address is 6570 Lewis B. Puller Memorial Highway (across the bridge on the left) in Mattaponi (just east of West Point). Their phone number, should you want to call in an order, is 804-785-2400.
