When we think of going out to a nice, local restaurant, lots of names pop up, but not Boar’s Head. Somehow, I think of that as a touristy sort of place, and it never comes into play as a potential dining destination.
Last weekend, however, we attended an event at Boar’s Head running from 7:30 to 9 so we had to grab a bite before the show and Nancy chose the Mill Room at Boar’s Head.
Wow! It was fabulous, and though not inexpensive, the portions were huge, and the value was there.
We shouldn’t have ordered appetizers, but we did. Our server recommended a Fried Green Tomato dish, which I love, and Nancy went with Fried Chicken Livers. My Fried Green Tomatoes ware served on two English Muffins topped with Melted Pimento Cheese, Lump Crabmeat with a House Hollandaise Sauce. After I finished that, I could have asked for the check but there was lots more to come.
Nancy expected to see 2 or 3 Chicken Livers on a salad plate, but it was a plateful, enough for an entree. She couldn’t finish them, and this was just the appetizer. For dinner, we both ordered Tempura Flounder, thinking maybe a few strips of Flounder Filet, but no. We each had 2 huge Flounder Filets fried Tempura Style. We were stuffed and the final bill was no more that we would pay for a nice dinner at Bonefish.
Boar’s Head, of course is a Charlottesville Icon and a wonderful destination site for out-of-towners, but it’s also a darned good place for a fine meal. If you haven’t been in a while, get a table at the Mill Room and you won’t come away dissatisfied or hungry. Go to boarsheadresort.com for information or reservations.
