I enjoy mowing my lawn. Well, almost.
I would still rather be dunking a minnow near a brush pile and catching crappies or even whacking at little white golf balls that get in my way, but no longer is grass mowing such a chore.
Last year, I bought an eFORCE 56-Volt 21-inch Cordless Battery Self-Propelled Lawn Mower by ECHO. It makes lawn mowing practically painless. I didn’t get an electric mower to save the planet, but rather because I did not like the suspense behind cranking a gas mower and having it decide whether or not to start. Nor did I like to go to the gas station for 2 gallons of gas, nor dribbling oil in that top hole nor the racket made by the Briggs and Stratton Engine.
Now, I push a button, put the mower in gear and I’m off to the races. The eFORCE has five forward gears, so you can walk at your own speed. The number 5 gear is so fast you have to trot to keep up, so I don’t use that one. I think the thing I like most is that you can shut off the forward gear with the squeeze of a handle. That makes negotiating tight places easier.
The only downside to an electric mower is the battery. It lasts about 45 minutes, so I need 2 batteries to mow the front and back in one day. The batteries take about 3 hours to re-charge, and they are not inexpensive – like two-hundred bucks apiece! Don’t know how long they last, but 2 new batteries would cost almost as much as a new mower.
That’s the problem we will have with electric cars. Batteries are hugely expensive, and they can be dangerous.
I don’t intend on ever buying an electric car, but I certainly have enjoyed my electric mower.
