Bluebird babies are just starting to peck their way out of the shells and Mom and Dad Bluebird will soon be hard at work. Those who truly love bluebirds assist the parents with heaping bowls full of meal worms. The little wigglers (larvae of the black beetle) are full of protein and supplement the chicks’ diets.
I have been buying meal worms for over 25 years and my best source is Fluker Farms. Fluker’s has all sorts on insects and worms for pets, reptiles, and birds. They are perhaps best known for lively crickets. I bought a batch of crickets from them once with the intention of feeding them to my frogs, but the crickets had other plans. When I tossed them in the pond and on lily pads, they were outta’ here. Zoom. Zip. Gone. The frogs had no chance.
But the mealies take a spell before wiggling to life and my bluebirds love them. The worms are a good size (medium is best) and they come in fresh and healthy. Fluker ships out of Louisiana, but they check the zip codes and never ship when the worms will be trapped in a warehouse over the weekend. If I order on a Monday before noon, I’ll usually have my shipment by that Wednesday. I store them in the original container in the refrigerator and keep nicely.
