I never had a nanny, my children never had a nanny and none of my friends have a nanny in their homes. I do, however, have a bluebird family now nesting in my back yard with their own personal nanny. Let me explain.
Last year, after a run of 8 or 10 years, we did not have bluebirds nesting in our yard. It was a sad summer. Early this spring, I held out hope when I saw a pair of the blue beauties poking around our various houses, but no dice. They flew elsewhere for their nesting needs. But last week, the bluebird couple – along with an extra female bluebird – started building a nest in the bluebird box on our fence.
While the male and female “blues” were busy at work with leaves and twigs, the nanny bluebird sat by idly and observed.
My wife Nancy thinks the nanny is really a bluebird baby from the previous nest, but I disagree. The bird looks full-grown and has a full color for a hen. I think she is a spinster – a real nanny bluebird.
Regardless, I am ecstatic to see the bluebirds return to my yard. I guess it’s time to order 10,000 meal worms so that in a couple weeks, the nanny bluebird can get to work and help feed all the little ones.
