Ta da! It’s me. The Inflation Fighter: Able to leap over steep prices with a single bound, faster than a speeding Visa credit card check. I am the Inflation Fighter! At least in the grocery store.
I seriously believe that I am spending less now, even after the crazy inflation going on at grocery stores. I am spending less because inflation ticks me off and I’m not going to take it lying down. I am really watching what I buy and how much I am paying and it’s paying off.
One of the keys of the Inflation battle is avoiding waste. It is staggering how much food we throw away. Just two of us can nearly fill a tall kitchen trash can with wasted food that we don’t eat. We just throw it out. It could amount to as much as 20% of what we buy. So, the number one way to beat rising prices is to be more efficient in what we but and eat.
One of the best ways to achieve that goal is with proper storage. Namely a Food Saver.
I use my Food Saver regularly, where in the past, I may have used it once a month or so on a large purchase from Sam’s. But now I use it to preserve even smaller amounts of food. Bacon, for example. Have you seen the price of bacon recently?
A pound of Smithfield Center Cut bacon can run $7 or $8 and you don’t want to waste any of that.
Nancy and I like bacon, but we often eat it only on weekends when we have time to cook a big eat-in breakfast. In the past, we might cook a few slices, put the bacon in a Zip Loc only to find it turning green in a week.
Not anymore.
I bought a pound, stripped off 4 or 5 slices for the frying pan, then immediately put the rest of the bacon in an air-tight Food Saver Bag, sucked out all the air and put in back in the freezer. It was in like-new condition when I thawed it. I even refroze the rest of the bag and will use it this weekend. Zero waste.
The number one rule for the Inflation Fighter is to eliminate or minimize waste. Next up. Buy in bulk!
