Charlottesville is not yet in the same class as San Francisco as far as the prevalence of street junkies, filth, and drugs, but Mr. Jefferson’s town is making progress. Where there once was an historically significant statue of one of the greatest military generals of all time, there is now a cluster of tents in a city park.
The newly hired City Manager, Sam Sanders, removed the park’s 11 p.m. curfew a few weeks back to accommodate the illegal campers. But then he decided against his previous decision and declared that on Oct. 21, the curfew will resume its previous operating hours of 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., meaning the encampment will go away.
Apparently, having people living in squalor near the great and powerful Downtown Mall is not good for business. Imagine that.
The tent people, however, say they’re not going anywhere. We’ll see.
