It’s been a strange year for back yard gardeners. We have had weekly rains since April, so you think that would be good. But we have had almost weekly 90 degree sweltering days and that’s often not so good.
My early garden was pretty good – lettuce, peas, and onions, but my summer garden has not been so great. I got a dozen cukes and several of the vines just died. I’ve picked a dozen zucchini squash from 2 plants, but no yellow squash. My limas look good, but lots of blooms and no beans as of yet.
It’s just been strange.
Fellow gardener, Bill Hitt, didn’t get a single tomato, but Nancy’s above-ground garden had tons of tomatoes. I haven’t picked the first tomato; my vines are still going, but few blooms.
I may have waited too late to plant my summer garden this year. Next spring, I’m going for a late April planting and if it frosts, it frosts.
You’ve got to feel sorry for what real farmers go through. Their living depends on the fickleness of Mother Nature.
