“Hosta” La Vista, Baby
Hostas are hardy perennials that require almost no special attention and are perfect for a garden that doesn’t get too much sun. Reliable and easy to grow, hostas are long-lived—and may even outlive the gardener. Except. Hostas are a favorite target of deer and rabbits, and with all the deer around, hostas very seldom get the opportunity to bloom. They get eaten, first. But not our … [Read more...]
Best Ribs Ever
I made the best ribs I have ever cooked last night, Lucky perhaps, but they were scrumptious. We eat ribs on a fairly regular basis, though I always gain weight the next day, and I probably have never cooked them the same way twice. I’m always experimenting. For this batch of ribs I bought 2 Back Ribs, not Baby Back ribs. I cut each in half to make space and used a salt and pepper and a brown … [Read more...]
Snakeheads Now in Lake Orange
Got an email from a friend who was at Lake Orange the day DWR biologists had electroshocked a cooler full of snakehead fish, including an 11 pounder. If they can shock up an entire cooler full, that means Lake Orange is full of the prehistoric-looking fish. Darryl Kennedy at Angler’s Landing, the lake’s on-site marina, said that several snakeheads were caught this week on top water frog … [Read more...]
Playing Possum
I had an interesting visitor to my backyard recently – a possum. I’m sure he is a frequent visitor, but only after dark. It’s rare to see a possum in the daytime, unless it’s in the form of a flattened carcass on the side of the road. Possums are not very good road-crossers. This was a big possum, nice and fat, and would probably have made a nice roast, if you’re into possum meat. Thank you, … [Read more...]
Sweet Pepper Salad
I have discovered some sweet peppers I really enjoy. They are small peppers and come in an assorted bag of red, yellow, and orange. They are called Wild Wonders from Sunset Foods. They are mini peppers and super sweet. They are good sauteed and added to any Italian dish, but I thought I’d make a summer salad with the little fellows and came up with this concoction. I chopped up about 15 of … [Read more...]
Tomato Update
My tomato crop has already exceeded last year’s bust, and I have been getting a slow and steady supply, but nothing special. The best thing is that so far (knock on wood) none of my ‘maters have had blemishes or end rot, and so far, no critters have attacked my innocent tomatoes the day before I would pick them. Last year I bought a gizmo that makes a clicking noise, activated by … [Read more...]
So, I Bought an Air Fryer
I broke down and bought an air fryer. I got it at Aldi’s for $29.95. I’ve wasted more than that on many things, so I bit the bullet. It’s a compact size, meaning you can only get enough stuff in the little tray for about 2 people, but that’s all we’ve got. Two. Since it involved some instructions, I let it sit on the counter for about a week, I circled it suspiciously before finally putting it … [Read more...]
Boar’s Head for Fine Dining
When we think of going out to a nice, local restaurant, lots of names pop up, but not Boar’s Head. Somehow, I think of that as a touristy sort of place, and it never comes into play as a potential dining destination. Last weekend, however, we attended an event at Boar’s Head running from 7:30 to 9 so we had to grab a bite before the show and Nancy chose the Mill Room at Boar’s Head. Wow! It … [Read more...]
How to be a Better Putter
Being a good putter is easy if you know the secret. The secret is to buy a new putter. I have an antique Titleist blade-type putter I bought in 1962 that has missed its share of 3 footers over the years. But when it started missing 2 footers on a regular basis, I went to Dick’s Sporting, checked out one of those new-fangled putters with lines and red dots and a blade only slightly … [Read more...]
