Nancy said she wanted to go out to eat at a Mexican restaurant and she had just given me a new stovetop, so what could I say? We chose one of Charlottesville’s most consistently good Mexican restaurants – Guadalajara. Known fondly as The Guad, we have been eating here for years. The prices are more than fair, the service is good, and they always serve more-than-you-can-eat helpings. Nancy … [Read more...]
They’re Still Around
Red drum, that is. There was a nice run of the Reds on Virginia’s Southern Beaches this week. Many anglers had luck after dark. Captain Craig Page and guests aboard the Paige II also landed some impressive red drum near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel proving that the fall fishery is still strong. Captain Todd Beck of Knot Wish’n Charters reported 62-degree water and a strong speckled trout … [Read more...]
A Drive Back in Time
Last weekend, I was having a hard time trying to remember exactly how I once drove to Monterey and Warm Springs. I had done it dozens and dozens of times and then it dawned on me – it had been 25 years since I last went over those mountains. Those were the days when I and my “buds” camped on the banks of the Jackson River and sheltered in place in a rustic hunting lodge at Millboro. But as the … [Read more...]
The Tufted Titmouse
They are pretty little birds with gray suits and dark black eyes and a black face. They are tufted titmice, and we have a family in our yard each year. The year-round residents visit our feeders regularly and they absolutely love peanuts. I don’t spread peanuts in my yard as much as I once did because that encourages the squirrels – destructive varmints that they are. Our squirrels actually … [Read more...]
Buy Ibuprofen Stock
If you’re looking for a good stock with growth potential, buy stock in a company - any company - that makes Ibuprofen. My wife Nancy and I alone will keep that stock going up. We use so many IB’s a day, we don’t dig them out of the bottle, we scatter them on counters around the house and grab a handful as we pass by. Ibuprofen (Advil is one of its brand names) is an anti-inflammatory drug … [Read more...]
Razor Blade Slots in Cabinets
I did a piece on Gillette last week and my friend, Hal Hurka, asked if I remembered the slots in the back of medicine cabinets where we once put used blades.Hal said that during his remodeling days, he came across lots and lots of old blades stashed in the backs of cabinets. I did remember and it brought back memories. Why did people put them there? Because when folks back in the days of … [Read more...]
Homemade Biscuit Toast
You can’t get it at Waffle House, you can’t get it at IHOP. In fact, you can’t get it at any restaurant that I know of. You can only get it at home. Biscuit Toast. It’s the perfect breakfast food straight out of your mom’s cookbook. You transform last night’s biscuits into a breakfast bonanza. You can use one of your biscuit halves to sop up the runny yellow from a fried egg or you can slather … [Read more...]
Celebrate Bat Week
Yep, this coming week is Bat Week, ironically in advance of Halloween, vampires, ghosts, and goblins. But bats are perhaps the most misunderstood of all animals. They are feared and loathed by some, but they play a vital part in our environment. Writes Courtney Celley of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, “We at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service want to set the record straight and help others … [Read more...]
How Low Can It Go?
Our trout streams are suffering right now from lack of rain. Generally, a decent hurricane refreshes our mountain streams in September and October, but that has not happened this year. John Savides of Afton fished the Jackson River last weekend, and despite low water, found one pool holding a 26-inch rainbow which John brought to net. The fish are there, they just need more water. The state has … [Read more...]
Cooling Waters Deliver Some Hot Fishing
The cooler water temps have stirred the appetites of many fish in the Bay and tributaries. Some stud-sized flounder are coming from the humps and structure near the CBBT. Speckled trout fishing is beginning to boil in shallow waters and near grass beds. Puppy drum are right there with them. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) islands are productive for Tautog and Sheepshead near pilings and … [Read more...]
