My Catbird is Hanging in There
In the past, my catbirds always fly away in early September, as soon as the chicks are up and at ’em. And they did again this year, except for one. A lone, single catbird has decided to stay. I expect he or she is a young bird, likely hatched in the thicket behind our house. There were two catbird families that used our yard and feeders. Nancy saw him a week or so ago and told me. Can’t be, … [Read more...]

Country Fried Goodness
The Texas Roadhouse is just around the corner from our house. It’s easy to get to, there are almost always a couple seats open at the bar (where we like to eat), the prices are fair, and the food is really good. Naturally, it’s one of our top choices for dining out. Last week, I arrived home after a couple days on the road and we decided to hit “The Loud Place” for dinner. Nancy calls it the … [Read more...]

The CBBT is a hot spot for tright now. Sandbridge is the … [Read more...]

At Lake Orange, for example, water temperatures have dropped to the low 70s. Bass and crappie are heading to the bank. The next few weeks will bring bass and crappie on to shallow brush, feeding on baitfish. A variety of soft … [Read more...]
Return to the Greenbrier
We were three high school buddies from Lewisburg. Dave, Harold, and I had played ball together, we had gone to school together, and as boys, we had spent hours and hours fishing on the Greenbrier River. Through the years, Dave and I have stayed in touch, but I lost track of Harold about 60 years ago. He contacted me through CvilleBuzz and we have been great pen pals for the last 7 or 8 … [Read more...]
Three Guys, Two Bedrooms
The cottage on the Greenbrier was magnificent and we spent much of our time on the spacious porch overlooking the river. It was a perfect place for our rendezvous except for one problem - there were three of us and only two bedrooms. I was not concerned - at first. There was a spacious couch in the living room, and I take some of my best naps on couches. So, I brought sheets, a blanket and a … [Read more...]
Chronic Wasting Disease
By Bruce Ingram Understandably, chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a topic much on the minds of Virginia sportsmen and wildlife watchers. Alexandra Lombard, wildlife health coordinator for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), provided an update. “Right now, we have CWD in nine counties in Northern Virginia and in four counties in Southwest Virginia,” she said. “The disease is … [Read more...]
