We had some shrimp cocktail as an appetizer recently, and the shrimp were out of sight. Succulent, juicy, delicious. They tasted like they just came from the nets of a shrimp trawler out of Wanchese, North Carolina. Turns out, they were from Food Lion – extra-large, fully-cooked shrimp, about 26-30 per pound. I have had good luck before with Food Lion shrimp. On several occasions, I have … [Read more...]
Trophy Trout Time
The Bay’s water temperature is currently hovering in the high 50s, which means that the trophy speckled trout are on the feed. Specks like cold weather and they are hitting bais under popping corks, swim baits and Mirro-Lures in most of the tidal inlets, creeks, and rivers. Captain Todd Beck with Knot Wish’n charters reported a fantastic trout bite at Rudee Inlet on Friday, with … [Read more...]
While Shepherds Watched
Well, I’ve published a book. A booklet, actually, called “While Shepherds Watchedâ€. It’s a short story about a young shepherd boy named Amos who was among those keeping watch in the fields on that first Christmas night. Several had suggested that I turn this story I had written several years back into book form. They said it would make a great Christmas gift for friends, neighbors … [Read more...]
Shop at Reid’s
Our community grocery store, Reid’s Super Save, is making a great comeback. Struggling a month or so ago with spiraling labor, and product costs, Reid’s cut back their stock on canned goods and certain items and continued to concentrate on their specialty - quality meats and produce products, and they are recovering nicely as the Charlottesville community responds. Though it’s on the … [Read more...]
Martin Luther King Geese
About 25 years ago, I got a call from Neil Selby up in Remington. “Can you be up here about 5 tomorrow morning? We’ve got geese and lots of them.†Neil, a long-time friend, owns Shady Grove Kennels, a hunting preserve. Neil also is a master dog trainer. “Sure,†I replied. “See you at 5 AM.†It happened to be on a Monday in early February and I remembered I had not bought … [Read more...]
New, Old Fashioned Meat Loaf
There are probably as many recipes for meat loaf as there are kitchens in America. Every family has their favorite. I was particularly fond of my Mom’s meat loaf. She used – among other things – tomato paste and lots of onions in her meatloaf. When we married, Nancy used her mother’s recipe with lots of catsup. It took a while, but now I’m used to that recipe and enjoy it. Recently, I … [Read more...]
Rain, Rain, Don’t Go Away
The weatherman called for rain this past Tuesday, but I didn’t realize that he called for all of the rain on one day. Our rain gauge on Wednesday morning measured just shy of 6 inches. But we’ll take it. The reservoirs are now full as are our rivers and trout streams, and ground water levels have been replenished. I’m not telling Mother Nature how to run her business, but it would be … [Read more...]
Celebrating 101 Years of Holiday Band Concerts
Steve Layman, Music Director of The Charlottesville Band, announced that The Charlottesville Band’s 101st Holiday Concert will be held Sunday, December 10 at the Paramount Theater in Downtown Charlottesville at 3:30 pm – with FREE admission, naturally. Rumor has it that some of the current members played in that original concert, but that is unsubstantiated. Still, 101 years. That’s … [Read more...]
Leaf It to Me
I have mowed by backyard leaves three times, and that’s enough. If more leaves fall, so be it. However, the leaves on the patio and in the garden beds were not mow-able. So, I sucked them up in my leaf grinder/shredder and spread them in my garden. I totally covered the garden soil with about 2-inches of the shredded leaves and - look out vegetables - it should be another great year … [Read more...]
Yummm! It’s Sea Bass Time!
One of the best eating saltwater fish of all – the black sea bass – is tugging on rods in deeper water, over wrecks. Quality Triggerfish are also being caught. Other boats have successfully been targeting Swordfish. Quality Speckled Trout are being caught in local creeks and inlets. Prolonged, unseasonable warm water temperatures have held smaller speckled trout longer than usual. Larger … [Read more...]
