The Outback was once our go-to restaurant. It was just around the corner, and in minutes after we made the decision not to cook at home, we were sitting at the bar or a table and scanning the menu. Then, Outback moved to a much larger location further down Rt. 29 and they were severely understaffed for a while and the service and quality suffered. But they have recovered nicely. For my birthday … [Read more...]
Thoughts On Being a Senior
I'm going to retire and live off my savings. Not sure what I'll do the second week. Old age is coming at a really bad time! I don't have gray hair. I have "wisdom highlights". My people skills are just fine. It's my tolerance of idiots that needs work. Even duct tape can't fix stupid ... but it can muffle the sound! The kids … [Read more...]
Rockfish Action
The jumbo striped bass are beginning to enter the bay and are tugging on rods on the Eastern Shore near Cape Charles. Smaller “Rocks†are being caught around the CBBT and up into the Rappahannock and James Rivers. Big, speckled trout continue to prowl the inlets on the western side of the bay. Puppy drum are available as well. Some terrific sea bass action is happening on the deep-water wrecks … [Read more...]
A Fishy Garden
On a December morning many years ago - I suppose it was around the time Rose Mary Woods accidentally erased 18 minutes from his President Nixon’s secret tapes – a half dozen of us rose before dawn to drive and meet a charter captain at Callao for a fishing trip on the Chesapeake Bay. As I recall, several on the trip had finished their first Bloody Mary’s before we got to Richmond and then … [Read more...]
While Shepherds Watched
People are actually buying the book I wrote and had published. “While Shepherds Watched†is a short story describing how I think things might have been among the shepherds keeping watch in the fields outside Bethlehem on the first Christmas Eve. It turns out that the little book fits perfectly in a 6 x 9 envelope and would make a very special Christmas Card. The books are available at … [Read more...]
Soups On
When the nighttime temperatures plunge into the 20’s, it means one thing. Time to make soup. The three soup staples at our house are turkey and rice, vegetable beef soup and chili – if chili can be called a soup. This week, when the brrrr-factor kicked in, I decided on a slight change of pace. Chicken soup made with chicken thighs – the most flavorful of all the chicken parts. … [Read more...]

Freshwater mussels and fish: A timeless love affair
By U.S.Fish & Wildlife Service Beneath the surface of the water, embedded in river bottoms, hidden in estuaries, and mistaken for rocks, lurk the invisible engineers of our aquatic ecosystems. Throughout our waterways, from urban rivers to the country streams, countless freshwater mussels are cleaning the water, taking out the trash, and stabilizing the entire aquatic community. But … [Read more...]
Pentatonix: A Must-See Christmas Concert
Pentatonix is coming to Charlottesville on December 9 at JPJ, and I believe some tickets remain. If you ever go, this is the one concert to see. We saw the acapella group last summer in Northern Virginia, but this is their Christmas concert – their specialty. I didn’t know this about Pentatonix, but the group is very religious. They pray together before each performance and their faith … [Read more...]
Tiger Fuel
We put in gas logs about 20-years ago, one of the best decisions we ever made. Tiger Fuel was there to help us get started and they have since been Johnny-on-the-spot when we need refills. They are also experts at servicing and maintaining gas logs. Each year, we have them come out and check on things, adjust the logs and add batteries as needed. They are efficient, courteous, and most … [Read more...]
