I miss seeing the test pattern in the early morning hours and I miss hearing the National Anthem played each night at the end of broadcasting. I miss seeing Dave Garroway on the Today Show and I miss the zany comics on the Steve Allen Show – Louis Nye, Tom Poston, and Bill Dana (Jose Jimenez). I miss the Maxwell House commercials and the smell of hot tubes within the TV set. I miss the great … [Read more...]
An (Almost) Christmas Cactus
For 11 months, our little house plant sits in the corner, biding its time. Then, at Christmas, it goes into full bloom. It is, after all, a Christmas Cactus. Except, our little plant gets excited when the Christmas lights go up, and Christmas music echoes throughout the house. Then he blooms prematurely, sometimes as early as Thanksgiving. Christmas cactus is a favorite house plant … [Read more...]
Happy New Year Havarti Dip
Our good friend, Nancy McKay, gave us a fruit basket of gourmet pears with a large wedge of Havarti Cheese. We ate the pears (Nancy made a pear dessert) but then had the cheese remaining. My wife scoured cookbooks and the Internet and found an interesting recipe for Havarti Cheese Dip. It was one of the best dips I have ever had the pleasure of dragging a Ritz Cracker through. If you … [Read more...]
Signs of Our Times
Suet Time
My two suet feeders have been getting more and more attention with the arrival of winter. I have had nuthatches, downy woodpeckers, red bellied woodpeckers, sparrows, chickadees, titmice, bluebirds, and wrens squeezing in and out of the suet cages. Cardinals, and mockingbirds will also come to suet feeders, but I haven’t seen them at the feeders in my yard. Maybe later. Suet is an inexpensive … [Read more...]
I Speak for the Trees
Like the Lorax, I speak for the trees, and this Lorax says don’t waste your Christmas tree – recycle it! Christmas is over. It’ll soon be time to un-decorate the tree, drag it out to the curb and let the trash guys do their thing. But not so fast! A Christmas tree has many uses after the holiday season is over. For one, it makes ideal cover for small birds as they face the coming winter. … [Read more...]
Careful What You Wish For
A couple weeks before Christmas, I was reminiscing with a friend about how great it was to get a Lionel train for Christmas. Then I wrote about a childhood experience with a train set. My wife, Nancy, was paying attention and damned if I didn’t get one for Christmas. It was a genuine Lionel Polar Express Battery-operated set, not one of those old metal ones that cost a thousand bucks. But it … [Read more...]
Tips on Fishing Tidal Rivers
By Alex McCrickard/DWR Opportunities to fish tidal rivers are plentiful along the western shore of the Chesapeake from the Potomac in Northern Virginia down to the James River and everything in between. These large tidal tributaries follow a salinity gradient where freshwater at the fall line turns brackish, with higher salinity concentrations the closer one travels down river to the confluence … [Read more...]
Colder Can Be Better
Often colder water heats up freshwater fishing, especially at Lake Anna, when the big bass bite begins as the water temperature goes south of 50. The striper bite is better, as well. Jerkbaits, spoons and vibrating baits are productive when it gets chilly. Crappie are biting as well, but they are deep, clinging to bridges and deep structure. The lower ends of Lake Gaston and Buggs Island … [Read more...]
