When I was a. boy, we never had lunch on Sunday. It was always a “mid-day dinner” and we ate the leftovers for supper. Sunday Dinners were special. After church, we came home to a feast of roast beef, leg of lamb, ham, pork loin, fried chicken, or some other heavy entree. The “dinner” came with all the fixing’s – rolls, gravy, green beans, boiled potatoes, pickled beets, sliced … [Read more...]
Tomato Pie
So, we’ve got our green veggie for dinner – broccoli, green beans, maybe asparagus – and we need a starch or extra vegetable, maybe something with a little color. How about a Tomato Pie – tasty, healthy, easy to make and attractive? I made one last week and it was very good in spite of the fact that vine-ripe, fresh tomatoes aren’t yet available. For this recipe you want fresh tomatoes, not … [Read more...]
Ear Hair
God has a sense of humor. Afterall, he gave us penguins – which are impossible not to observe and let out a chuckle or at least a smile. He also gave us truly funny people – like Jonathan Winters, Steve Martin, Jack Benny, and Bob Hope. But then, right before the Seventh Day when He rested, God gave old men ear hair. As far as I know, women of any age don’t have tufts of hair follicles … [Read more...]
A Strawberry Patch for the Birds
A neighbor asked us if we wanted a strawberry pot – a ceramic pot that you fill with dirt and plant strawberries in the 8 or 10 holes on the sides and in the top. We took it and just put it in the upper part of our vegetable plot that gets little sun. The existing strawberry plants did not like being confined to the pot, so they began sending out sprouts and soon took hold in the … [Read more...]
Counting Birds
In the past few weeks, I have had visits from white-throated sparrows, catbirds, and my first hummingbirds of the year. Those three species along with my past visitors total 32 types of birds I have seen either in my yard or flying over. We are blessed with a back yard filled with hedges and shrubs and lots of trees which provide good cover. I also provide water and a large variety of seeds and … [Read more...]

Riverside North
You eat well throughout the week, counting calories, nibbling on celery sticks and helpings of kale, and then you say, “To hell with this, I want real food.” That’s when Nancy and I get in the car and head for Riverside North. We order greasy cheeseburgers, onions rings and a basket full of French Fries. Next week, we’ll diet, but for now, we’re eating food as God intended. Riverside simply has … [Read more...]
Are the Big Blues Back?
About this time 30 years ago, sportsmen headed for the coasts of Virginia and Carolina to catch bluefish. Big, gator-sized bluefish to 20 pounds. Then, they went away, perhaps victim of the netters who caught them by the truckloads and sold them as catfood for a nickel a pound. Well, maybe they are back. Capt. Reese Stecher and parties have been catching them up to 10-pounds in the sounds at … [Read more...]
The Do’s and Don’ts of Hawk Chasing
I had just put a handful of mealworms in the bowl near the bluebird house and stood back to watch the male fly to the feeder and secure a beak full of worms. Suddenly, a hawk swooped over the fence, talons stretched, heading for the bluebird. Fortunately, the hawk missed as the bluebird ducked quickly, but these bluebirds are like my children, only better behaved. Startled and extremely upset, I … [Read more...]
Parmesan Turkey Tenderloins
I don’t know why I bought a turkey tenderloin. I had no earthly idea how I would fix it, but it looked good. I knew it was healthy and it was under ten bucks, so I bought it. Maybe I should say “them” because there are always two turkey loins to a pack. You don’t often see turkey tenderloins in the grocery stores. They are the loin cuts from the bottom of a turkey breast – the tender … [Read more...]
