When I moved to Charlottesville in 1967, I asked around about the really important things – where to meet women, where to catch fish, and the best places to eat. I found out on my own the best place to meet women, which was where I worked – Leggett’s Barracks Road. I met a cute little honey there named Nancy and we have been married for over 50 years. As for fishing, my advisors sent … [Read more...]
20,000 Meal Worms
(1 of 20,000) I have now ordered 20,000 meal worms from Fluker Farms. I fully expect that amount will last me through the season. My bluebirds have produced two nests and my goal is to supplement the hard-working creatures while they try to feed many hungry beaks. In past years, I have run out of meal worms at the end of the season and have had to buy them from local pet shops, and … [Read more...]
Barbequed Pork Bites
I grill a lot. Steaks, burgers, dogs, chicken, shrimp, etc. One thing I had never tried, however, was pork bites. I decided to give them a shot and the dish turned out very well. I bought a pack of pork tenderloins (always 2 in a pack; don’t know why) and I cut one loin into bite size pieces. I marinated them in a BBQ sauce, put the bites on several skewers and grilled them over high heat. They … [Read more...]
More Squirrel Plantings
Every year we are surprised by a plant or plants popping up in our yard that we had nothing to do with. Sometimes it’s a stalk of corn, sometimes a sunflower, sometimes a vine of some sort. The mystery plants come from squirrel plantings as the digging devils hide their stash anywhere they can find soft dirt. This year, we have a beautiful plant developing in one of Nancy’s flower beds and … [Read more...]
Mama Goldfish Comes Through
We have had goldfish in our various backyard ponds for over 20 years. They all originated from a dozen small goldfish I had bought for bait. I used 4 of the goldfish without luck and had 8 left over. Thinking I might try again, I put the survivors in Nancy’s 35-gallon lily pond and was severely reprimanded when the illegal aliens were discovered. But Nancy began feeding them. They came eagerly to … [Read more...]
Lasting Beauty with Hydrangeas
We had a hydrangea bush in the yard when we moved in some fifty years ago. It’s still going strong and is as lovely as ever. This year, the bush is outdoing itself in splendor. As it evolves this year, we have pink, blue, lavender, and mint green colors. Hydrangeas mainly flower in shades of blue, pink, and white, but the coloring can depend on the type of soil. Some hydrangeas produce blue … [Read more...]
Get Ready To Rumble
Buckle up, Virginia anglers. Some huge Spanish mackerel are on the way from Carolina and those 6- and 7-pounders will be soon entering the Bay. There are tons of smaller Spanish Macs already here. Captain Todd Beck and the crew have been hammering them, catching limits each trip. Anglers are also experiencing some of the best spring red drum fishing in years. Large drum schools have been … [Read more...]
Oh, Shenandoah
Looks like the Shenandoah is the spot for smallmouth these days. Water quality has been a bug-a-boo for the scenic Valley river but recent upgrades to runoff and pollution are paying off. Bryce Davis and John Savides from Afton took a float on the Shenandoah and put 50 in the boat, including nice smallies like the one pictured above. The river was a bit high and slightly stained and flashy … [Read more...]
The Family Car
It was the family car, and really a member of the family. It was the only “car member” of the family because most Boomer families in the 1950s and 1960s only had one car. Moms stayed home as a rule and dads drove the only car to work, or if mom had some shopping or errands to run, she dropped off dad and picked him up after work. Kids either walked or rode their bikes to school. The kids in the … [Read more...]
Sticker Shock at McDonald’s
When I was in college, McDonald’s hamburgers were 15c each. On a Sunday afternoon, I’d order 4, get a coke and some French fries and get change back from a dollar bill. Times have changed. Today (though prices vary from store to store) a Big Mac, Large Coke and Large Fries will set you back about $12.50. Add a buck and a quarter for Meal’s Tax and the total is now $14. If you are feeding a … [Read more...]
