A "Smoker" King Mackerel The only problem now when fishing saltwater is deciding what to go after. Cobia, drum, Spanish macs, King macs, flounder, spadefish, sheepshead, togs, speckled trout, stripers, croakers, and spot – they are all biting and the next few days look even better with light winds, mild temperatures and clear skies. We can start with king mackerel since that bite … [Read more...]
Under (Tire) Pressure
I have not always had good luck when dealing with tire pressure and gauges – like last week. We were on I-40 heading from Greensboro to Winston Salem for a family reunion and the NCDOT had a done a number on one of the lanes as they prepared for a new highway. It sounded like a jack hammer as we drove across the jagged concrete, and I figured this was not good for the tires. I figured right, … [Read more...]
Mexican Mac and Cheese
I do a Mexican dish at least once every two weeks, and the entrees are easy – Burritos, Tacos, Mexican Casseroles, Tamales, etc. but I struggle sometimes with side dishes other than Refried Beans and a platter of tortillas and salsa. Last week, I tried something different. I did a Mexican Mac and Cheese. It was pretty good, but then how can you go wrong with Mac and Cheese? I made my Mac and … [Read more...]
Lumpkin’s Has Closed
I drove down to Scottsville last week, and entering the town, there was no Rooster to greet us. The Rooster was the Lumpkin’s calling card. It was gone and Lumpkin’s is gone. Lumpkin’s was one of the last, great comfort food diners. They had amazing breakfasts, as we often ate there before fishing trips on the James. They had biscuits and gravy and grits and eggs anyway you like them, plus … [Read more...]
Build It, and They Will Come
Beautiful water lilies and hyacinths will come. Fish will come. Frogs will come and you can look forward to many pleasant hours sitting beside your goldfish pond. That is, if you build it. We did, obviously, and I’d like to share our experiences just in case you’d like to put in a pond in your yard. The hole is the hardest part. If you or a neighbor have a small backhoe, then you’re … [Read more...]
A Beautiful Butterfly Milk Weed
One of our most prized plantings is a gorgeous Butterfly Milk Weed. Butte A few years back, Nancy picked a half dozen small seeds from a Butterfly Milk Weed pod. She started them inside and nurtured them into small plants. When she brought them outside, she knew the damn squirrels would get in them and dig them up, so she put a heavy wire guard around them with a top to keep the squirrels from … [Read more...]
Our Pitiful Post Office
We got a bill from the Richmond Times Dispatch on July 25 and mailed them a check the next day. Three days later, they cancelled our subscription. They didn’t get the payment and over a week later, they still have not received our check. The Post Office was late sending us the invoice from the Times Dispatch, and they didn’t receive our payment until August 6. Unfortunately, this is typical of … [Read more...]
Four Rods Went Down
You troll and troll and nothing happens. You sit back and relax, maybe light a cigar or pop open a beer. Then, suddenly, “It’s fish on!” Not one, not two, not three, but four rods go down. It’s bluefish and some nice ones. Veteran angler, Dr. Ken Neill, had that experience this week while trolling in the lower Bay. Blues were all over the water. This has been an unusually good year for … [Read more...]
The State Fair
It’s “Fair Time” – county fairs, state fairs, any fairs. Fair time was a special time in Lewisburg WV in the 1950’s and 60’s. It didn’t take long after we moved to Lewisburg to discover that a huge event took place just outside of town. In Fairlea, a small burg between Lewisburg and Ronceverte, West Virginia staged their annual state fair in late August, and it was well worth the price of … [Read more...]
