I happen to enjoy shopping at the grocery store. I love to poke around in the produce department and look for good buys from the butcher. I like to save money when I can and still eat well. I am a Frugal Chef if there ever was one. All Frugal Chefs love their crockpots. A crockpot can take a relatively inexpensive cut of meat, like a chuck roast, and turn it into a company worthy entrée. It … [Read more...]
Plant a Butterfly Bush
Besides bluebirds, the most welcomed guests in my backyard are Monarch butterflies. They are like miniature, fine-art paintings flitting from bush to bush and flower to flower. They are magnificent creatures and they are threatened. Their fiercest enemies happen to be human beings, who are rapidly destroying meadows and the milkweed plants that Monarchs must have in order to survive. One of my … [Read more...]
Boomer Boys and Tennis Shoes
WWII and the uniforms worn by soldiers heavily influenced the wardrobe of Boomer kids in the early 50’s, particularly boys. We wore olive drab wool trousers, leather flight jackets, pilot-type leather caps and army boots. We all had crew cuts and looked like miniature GIs marching off to school. The old Army/Navy stores sold genuine surplus goods from the war effort. It was the most favored … [Read more...]
Chincoteague Flounder
Capt. Bob’s in Chincoteague reports red-hot fishing at Blackfish Banks Reef. Flounder fishermen are putting limits of fish, big fish, on ice in two hours or less. Also in the mix are nice sea bass, triggerfish and even Mahi Mahi. Francis Kosinski of Pennsylvania landed an 8-7, 285-inch citation flounder. To book a trip at blackfish Banks Reef, or for more information, call … [Read more...]
Chickahominy Largemouth
Through the years, the Chickahominy River has earned the reputation as a great spot for lots of bass. It’s the river many tournament anglers fish to increase the number of bass in their bags at weigh-in time. The Chick is not known as a “big bass” river. Well, don’t tell that to Shawn Shaefer from Pennsylvania. On a recent visit at Campers Paradise in Lanexa, Shawn fished just down river from camp … [Read more...]
Eastern Shore Tourist Fishing
The Ham family – Brent, Angelin, Ben, Brendan and Berkley - spent last week at Cherrystone Campground on the Eastern Shore, doing a little “tourist fishing.” The Greensboro family had lots of fun and caught a bunch of fish. Fishing near Cape Charles in a small boat, the Carolina crew caught flounder, spot, croakers, grey trout, speckled trout, puppy drum, hogfish, whiting, puffer fish, pin fish … [Read more...]
The Road to Spanish Macs
In this week’s Road Trips article, we’ll take a different road, not a paved highway, but a road of water leading to fish and great times on the Chesapeake Bay. This is a Road Trip with Capt. Dick Whitehill aboard the Miss Karen. The coming weeks on the Chesapeake highlight Capt. Whitehill’s specialty – Spanish mackerel. The delicious, hard fighting mackerel have moved well up into the Middle … [Read more...]
Nancy B’s House of Lights
It’s not easy changing the name of an established business. Government authorities need to be informed, there are signs, cards and stationary to change and the general public must be notified through an extensive advertising campaign. But changing the name of Builder’s Lighting to Nancy B’s House of Lights was something that Nancy Brewer (Nancy B) thought was worthwhile. That’s because – even … [Read more...]
Stoney Creek at Wintergreen
Boy, we have some great golf courses in Central Virginia. One of my favorites is Stoney Creek, a Wintergreen layout in Nellysford. My regular golf buddies and I played there last week. We used our VSGA cards and played 18 holes for just $26, and with a cart. Stoney Creek offers three 9-hole layouts, Tuckahoe, Monocan and Shamokin. We happened to play my favorite two – Tuckahoe and Monocan, both … [Read more...]
Wanna Play Some Whiffle Ball?
Today, it’s hard to imagine a world without plastics. But plastic products really hit their stride in America after World War II. Before that, the war machine consumed many of the organic materials necessary to create plastic. In the 1950’s, plastics went viral. In the late 1950’s, a product called a practice golf ball hit the store shelves. It was a small, white plastic sphere studded with … [Read more...]
